How could they....

All I can do is shake my head in disbelief......

When my husband suggest I watch it (as we recently purchased the DVD box set) I was all excited... Now I'm horrified - how could they do it????? Poor Devon... Poor KITT.... It was just horrible! Some people are so cruel.....!

i agree if the prdusers whanted to get wrid of devon they could have made devon retire from his job not kill him off

reply

I imagine there wasn't the budget for many stunts and the KIFT body probably cost too much to wreck in a big stunt..

I'm sure this was a pilot for a new show and had it gone to series I imagine we would've seen a lot of stunts from KITT in his new body!

reply

Toxie2k2 was correct...

i read that this was supposed to be the 'pilot' for a new knight rider series. david hassolhoff cammeoed to 'pass the torch on' to the female cop, who had kitts chip implanted in her brain. that im sure could have been interesting

devon getting killed off was sad, but it made this tv movie touching in my opinion. he wasnt going to star in the potential movie anyway.

i think they didnt show alot of the new kitts features because that was to follow. however, it did make the new kitt look pretty lame i agree. the 'screen dynamics' looked rather tacky cgi really. at least the original knight rider pilot had alot of kitts functions showing, but maybe this was to follow.

not a bad film, but could have been better. another potential series that never got a chance to flourish...

deven was dieing in real life any way

reply

Uh.... Edward Mulhare didn't die until 1997 -- long after this movie was made.

I hated it.

reply

He was probably ill while making this and/or not willing to star in a new series, I can't think of another reason why they'd kill off Devon.

reply

As a die-hard Edward Mulhare fan, I can tell you he only found out he was ill right before he started filming Out To Sea in 1996. He hadn't been feeling well and his friends had urged him to see a doctor, and he got the results only then. It was lung cancer, and they didn't hold out much hope, so he filmed Out To Sea, which was released after he died. He had been a heavy smoker for most of his life. After filming Out to Sea he started failing rapidly, falling in and out of comas for about the last six months of his life, and he died in May of 1997 - this movie was made in 1991.

As for him being murdered in the movie, all I can think of is he could recognize this poor attempt at new show as just that and wasn't in it any more than he had to be... Since it wouldn't be a real KR show without KITT, Michael and Devon, and the actors were wise enough not to be involved on a regular basis, but had to "pass the torch," so they had Michael come out of retirement for a short time and Devon last long enough to die a hero. I don't care, it still sucked.

Thanks for posting the EM details ghostfan.

reply

You're welcome. I've been a fan of his since ... 1968 when he starred in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. (Another really great show that hasn't come out on DVD yet.) I enjoyed Knight Rider, I just wish he could have had a bigger part!

I did think it was neat that William Daniels (KITT) also appeared in a GAMM episode.

reply

Wow.. so much '57 Chevy slagging on this board..

I don't like them as much as a lot of other people... sort of the universal '50's car'... there were many more interesting designs out at the same time IMHO (57-58 Plymouth's for example.. Christine for those who don't know)

but personally I thought it was amusing, especially KITT's reactions to what had been done to him... or the "I suppose you're going to say mine is better than yours" scene... which was brilliant..

But yes, I don't think this would have done well as a series without Michael... it might have even worked with only Devon to tie it to the old series, but they needed more than just KITT to make it work.

Speaking of KITT, has anyone seen that commercial with all of the TV 'robots' throughout the ages?... I forget what its a commercial FOR (naturally) but I thought it was pretty cool when they had KITT... and I'm pretty sure they actually got a hold of William Daniels for the voice.. considering he's usually resisted offers to replay the role outside of official stuff.. (I.E. that horrible Nick & Jessica Whogivesacrap attempt at a 'variety show')

reply

No. The commercial of which you speak, which was for AT&T btw (on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRxGu7Yy5rA), probably had another voice actor for KITT.

reply

Well if it wasn't him, its likely the best sound-alike I've ever heard.... and most of them are uniformly awful

reply

This isnt knigtrider at all, this totally su* so hard man...come on. ugly ass car, stupid plot. it isnt Kitt, it isnt knigtrider..it was a payed off cheap production to make money, what gladley didn't work.

I thought that Team Knightrider series was even more awful.

reply

It was a horrible film. Why Hasselhoff signed on for it is beyond me. It ruined the Knight Rider show of the 80s as it lacked all of the key elements of a good episode:

-Stunts (Turbo Boost, Ski Mode, even Super Persuit Mode)
-Good theme music (the 80s sound of Knight Rider made it a classic- the Jan Hammer theme sounded pretty lame)
-Action (the movie wasted time, didnt have KITT in it and only had the new car in the last 10 minutes)
-Regular characters (where is Bonnie, April, RC3, Garth Knight, Cameron Zachery etc)

It aint Knight Rider without the music either....

I also loved the fact that in 9 years they expected the whole country to have changed into this futuristic world of sonic guns and cryogenic prisons etc.

does any one agree if the Smallville theme would work?

I feel the words unspoken inside
And they pull you under...
And I would give you anything you want, no
You were all I wanted
All my dreams are falling down...

Somebody save me!
Let your warm hands break right through
Somebody save me!
I don't care how you do it
Just stay...
Stay, come on,
I've been waiting for you

I see the world has folded in your heart
I feel the waves crash down inside
And they pull me under...
And I would give you anything you want, no
You were all I wanted...

That is one thing about still watching this movie I hate that they killed Devon off. Edward died a few years ago and did work along with David one last time in Baywatch Nights. I believe Edward played some kind of doctor.

Sucks about Kitts old body but look what he eventally went into. You all think he looked bad before they put him back together you should have seen the ebay auction for the car from this movie. The whole inside was pretty much strip to the metal

Well I just watched it. For some reason, even though I was/am a very big Knight Rider fan, I never even knew this movie existed unitl recently.

I just wanted to say... what a monumental piece of crap. It makes the new movie look good.

Wow it left me both a little sad and a bit angry that I wasted the last hour and a half.

reply

I saw this garbage when it came out in 1991. I just sat down and watched it last night (bought the DVD's a while back and didnt watch KR2000). Man I tell you, whoever made this turd needs to be shot. What a disgrace.

reply

It's a freaking AWESOME movie! You guys are NUTS! You must be potheads.

reply

It's a great movie, far superior to the current KR series. Don't know if it would have made a good series, but with the real KITT in it, at least it would always be worth a watch.

You taste funny...

reply

Well, we Definitely got Closure, lol

This is the first time I have avoided viewing an episode altogether after reading the IMDB reviews. This really sounds like an episode/pilot to avoid. No real KITT, no stunts, and writing out Devon in what sounds like a cheap, unimaginative way, then I guess I am better off without it.

Maybe I'll have a look some time when I've watched the rest of the real series and just have to see the failed sequel. Or maybe not.

So thanks for your reviews! One-star flames are often not called for, often posted by people who don't get it, but here I see good arguments for them.

The 1991 movie was not up to standard, in my view. Aside from some good acting, other aspects were not convincing or effective in conveying drama or the Knight Rider ethos. Notice that (the following may include **spoilers**):

- the musical theme and score throughout the film was uninspired and not fitting the fact this was an adventure story. Slow electronic music more evocative of melancholy or general sadness and generic pop beats of the time didn't work

- there was very slow pacing of action and scene progression

- the film seemed to have bad direction and a number of average performances from speaking roles

- there were unexplained events in the plot, like Michael Knight's ability to repair/rig KITT (when did he obtain a degree in computer/electronic engineering?), or the amazing survival of Shawn and Michael after being trapped in a car underwater in the bay, and somehow being rescued (did they have mobile phones, and would they work with water as a barrier all around them? Remember, KITT was shorted out by seawater so he could not help them).

some of you may not know this but in Davd's book he made "Making Wives" he said in it he also was not happy with the script they sent him he said when he was done reading it he disagreed join the shows plan destroying KITT killing Devan. That is why in 2008 he tried to get Knight Ruder going his way ABC said no but they wanted him for Team Knight Rider but he was doing bay watch. So that is why Knight Rider failed for some years David wants to do it but he needs the right people that cares about the show then just upgrading it,
