Any connection to Kafka's novels and stories?

Are any aspects of the plot taken from Kafka's novels or stories? The only things by Kafka that I've read are The Trial and The Metamorphosis, and I wonder if any part of the film at all is based on a specific work by Kafka. For instance, are any of the scenes with Dr. Marnau (Ian Holm) adapted from Kafka's writings?

It's more akin to David Cronenberg's adaptation of Naked Lunch in that it culls material from several different Kafka stories, as well as aspects of his personal life, rather than being a straight adaptation of any single work.

Was the basic story for the subplot with Dr. Murnau (Ian Holm's character) taken from any of Kafka's stories?
