Terrible movie...

Okay, I went back and re-watched this movie after seeing it years ago. I was amazed at how bad it was. I can't really say it was the acting as there are some very good actors who turn in quality performances. There were also some interesting moments of dialogue such as the women's circle that delve into the issue of race. I guess the fault lies with the overall quality of the writing and directing.
I will say that Spike Lee has become an very strong director over the years. I thought Malcolm X was excellent, as was Inside Man. The 25th Hour, and Summer of Sam were both surprisingly good and Do the Right Thing was unpolished but intriguing. That said you can really see how far he's come by watching some of his earlier work.
Has anyone else watched this recently? Does anyone else find the script and much of the writing forced and awkward?

I am presently watching this terrible movie. I am not racist at all and I think this is a movie for racists, black or whites.
The music throughout the movie is badly chosen and often is distracting and makes no sense.
The acting is often laughable and forced.
Overall cringe wothy.
I remember seeing Malcom X at the cinema back when it came out and I thought it was an amazingly well acted and directed movie.
I guess Spike Lee got better with time.
But this movie is imho terrible.
Who the heck decided on this ridiculous soundtrack?

Ridiculous soundtrack? I loved how Spike Lee had Stevie Wonder cover the whole movie(except fora few of the Italian scenes), and in another Lee movie, Girl 6 (good movie too BTW) Prince did the whole soundtrack. I thought the soundtrack was a major highlight of the movie that would have changed a lot of the scenes if it wasn't there.

Directors like Lee and Scorsese are very good at using the soundtrack to set the tone and change the dynamic for their movies. I think the soundtrack is every bit as important as anything else to make a scene great.

Some examples are -

When Flipper was looking for Gator after he stole his parent's TV

When Flipper goes to see Drew at her job the day after she found out he was cheating

The scene where the good Reverend doctor shoots and kills Gator

The scene in Paulie's store when the guys tell Pauly that they know about Angie - Frank Sinatra It Was A Very Good Year
