John Candy
Is this the greatest cameo/bit part in cinema history?

Isn't he just in the lunch scene and then on the stand for like 20 seconds? Haven't seen this in a long time...
I do what I say and I say what I mean
I'm partial to Martin sheen cameo on Dead Presidents
John Candy role was spot on- if you've seen the real Dean Andrews the resemblance is uncanny
Agree about Dead Presidents, that was a great cameo...
I do what I say and I say what I mean
He did nail Dean Andrews perfectly, it was nice to see Candy in a more serious role (even though the person he was playing treated the world like he was in one big joke). I loved that bit when Costner says something like "Not nearly as cute as you, Dean" and Andrews thanks him in a perfect Southern manner.
shareI don't consider it a cameo, but it was amazing work by Candy. In that scene, he made Costner look like an extra.
shareCandy was great and came out of nowhere. First time seeing him in a none comedy format and he gave it his all.
shareHe did do a great job.
shareMy understanding is that Candy was hoping to break out of just doing comedy all the time and thought this role might help. Producers continued to just see him as a comedy guy, though.
He was pretty depressed about his career by the end of his life, I have read. Not even his comedy was working for him anymore. Very sad. The dude was a true talent, and by all accounts a genuinely good dude.
I completely forgot he was in this.
shareVery good for sure.
shareJohn Candy was great in this film, such a departure from his usual characters but he absolutely nailed Dean Andrews, if you watch footage of the real guy you realise just how scarily accurate Candy was.
shareYou could see elements of Candys serious acting ability in Trains, Planes and Automobiles.
It was a superbly judged and nuanced performance, with lots of subtle little touches that you may not pick up on first time round.
Foe me it's probably his defining role.
If I were making a list of actors who left a mark on a movie appearing in just one scene, he'd be near the top of it.
