The Mr. X scene still gives me goosebumps

Donald, The editing, The mUsic, "LBJ= I'l give u your damn war!"

Don't care if it's true or not. Never let the facts get in the way of a great stor

THAT scene is great storytelling

reply

Agreed. The most vivid scene in the entire film, IMHO

reply

it makes the movie.

I lean towards a conspiracy, but I don't really care if the info in that scene was made up or not.

It Doesn't matter....

reply

I agree. Great film making.

however, I still think Kevin Costner's courtroom monologue was the best part of the film.

reply

i couldn't agree more! Sutherland was aces in that scene!

reply

Completely agree.

Still my favorite scene in this (unbelievably great and incrediblly well put-together) film.

------

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

Same here. That's actually not only my favorite scene in this movie, but one of my favorite scenes in any movie. And i've seen a lot of movies. The scene was very well-made, with its ominous and uneasy air (contributed to greatly by the background music), the way it went into the history of US covert ops around the world, the black and white clips depicting the tension in the halls of power, and Sutherland's great voice and brilliant storytelling. He completely steals the scene, and his presence reduces Costner almost to background scenery next to him. Somehow, in this 10-minute scene, he ends up being one of the most memorable highlights of this 3-and-a-half-hour movie that's filled with so many other talented actors and so much well-crafted storytelling.

I'm a person who not only doesn't believe the inside job theory of the Kennedy assassination, but who doesn't even like Kennedy at all or buy the myth of Kennedy as some great reformer who would have waved a magic wand and changed the world if only he hadn't been struck down. And even I always find that Mr. X scene, and this film in general, utterly captivating. It's a testament to the brilliant filmmaking of Oliver Stone and the range of incredibly talented people he had working in it.

reply

I just watched Salvador all the way thru , and that might be Stone's best movie and I have seen them all up to the George bush movie.

Agree with all the comments. Kudos to the screenwriters for condensing so much CIA/Black Ops and related history into smaller bites and the editor for cutting it together so deftly.

I was a soldier, Mr. Garrison. Two wars. I was
one of those secret guys in the Pentagon that
supplies the military hardware - the planes,
bullets, rifles - for what we call "black
operations" - "black ops", assassinations, coup
d'etats, rigging elections, propaganda, psych
warfare and so forth. World War II - Rumania,
Greece, Yugoslavia, I helped take the Nazi
intelligence apparatus out to help us fight the
Communists. Italy '48 stealing elections,
France '49 breaking strikes - we overthrew
Quirino in the Philippines, Arbenz in Guatemala,
Mossadegh in Iran. Vietnam in '54, Indonesia
'58, Tibet '59 we got the Dalai Lama out - we
were good, very good. Then we got into the
Cuban thing. Not so good...

reply

Does anyone know who X and General Y were supposed to be?

reply

General Y was General Ed Lansdale, and X was a composite character -- Fletcher Prouty, John Newman and Richard Case Nagell.

Bubba is/was the same as calling someone "Brother"...

reply

That scene is absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately, like with many great scenes, and especially in such a long movie, the next hour drags a bit once we get to the trite stuff with Garrison's wife and his inner circle. But picks up in the courtroom scene at the end.

reply

"Don't care if it's true or not."

The conspiracy theorist's credo.
