Here's another version of the story I think is more believable, considering what happened at Ruby Ridge to Vicky and Sammy Weaver: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061220093635AAspZWV

I DO remember Gordon Kahl. He was finally captured in the Arkansas county that I worked as head of Civil Defense, now called FEMA. The sheriff that was killed, Gene Mathews, was a friend of mine. As to conspiracies - yes there can easily be some. When Gene's vest was examined it also had buckshot in the rear. Only the FBI were using shotguns. Also, the manor of both Gene shooting Gordon and Gordon shooting Gene is a bit strange. Gene shot Gordon directly in the brain with a .45 - a totally incapacitating shot. Gordon shot Gene with a .223 into the left elbow that went into his chest just below the "V" in the side. This was a paralyzing shot to the arm - Gene was left handed. All that I know for sure is that I lost a good friend and that Lawrence County lost one of their best ever sheriffs.

I too remember the Gordon Kahl incident. I was in my early 20's, and a lifelong resident of Bismarck, ND at the time. The story was huge in local news for months until the final shootout.

I'll never forget it. Haven't seen any film about it, as I got oversaturated with the news accounts at the time.
