Dr. Ken Taylor

Does anyone know where and if Ken Taylor is incarcerated? I'm assuming he's locked up for a long time but I couldn't find him on the NJ DOC website. Since the crime was committed in NJ, I figured he'd be floating around here somewhere but then again, he dumped Teresa in PA - so maybe he's there? If anyone has any recent updates, that would be great.

I checked, too, but couldn't find anything in New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania on Kenneth Taylor. I did find this link though. It has some old information and some pictures of the real people:

As of 2002 - Dr. Taylor is in Red Onion state prison in Pound, Virginia. He was moved OUT of the NJ system back in the mid to late 1980's. Interesting stroy as to why he was moved. Bob

reply

How do you know so much about it Bob? And why was he moved?

reply

Thanks for the information. If you'd like to tell us what happened, I'd be curious to know.

Hi jrzychris - Does that stand for Jersey Chris (as in New Jersey)? If so, where are you from in NJ? I'm in Freehold (home of Bruce Springsteen). Not too many people have an interest in this case anymore. When it comes on the Lifetime Channel I always get the calls from my friends letting me know it's on.

Anyway - to answer you about Dr. Taylor. He was originally in the Trenton State Prison to do his time. While he was in (either 1986/87), there were several inmates who were planning a break-out of the prison. Dr. Taylor was said to be one of the prisoners involved but he turned informant on the others for a PRICE. The PRICE was to be moved OUT of the New Jersey Corrections system BECAUSE he would be a "marked" man after having squealed on the others. That would get around real fast and he would NOT be safe in any prison in New Jersey. So he wanted OUT of New Jersey to a different state. So he was moved to Virginia for the information on the others involved in the planned breakout. The other prisoners had made a bow and exploding arrows (for a weapon), and a megshift extending bridge-like walkway to span from a roof to a roof. From what I understand they were going to come over the wall by the wardens residence.

OK - Now WHY DID HE DO THIS? Because at the time his parents had been indicted in New Jersey for interfering with custody of the baby. NJ had given visitation to HIS parents and they illegally adopted the baby in Indiana at this time so they could NOT come into NJ to visit Ken or they would have been arrested. So if he went far enought out of state - they could visit and not worry too much about being arrested and extradited.

So Dr. Taylor was moved to a prison outside of Richmond, Va. He made an escape attempt. He was moved to another prison and made another escape attempt and was finally transfered to Mecklenberg Prison in Virginia. He did OK there and was transfered to his current(I think) prison of Red Onion State Prison outside of Pound, Va. The last I know he was there was in 2002. I have not had any updates on Dr. Taylor as the author of the book (of the same name) Peter Maas diedback in 2001. Maas use to call me every so often with updates on Dr. Taylor and to pick my brain.

So there you have it. Dr. Taylor is a smart man, believe me. If it wasn't for this he would be your regular guy. He's not a bad guy - just made a BIG mistake.

If you want to reply use my regular email - [email protected] - as I had trouble bringing this one up from imdb.

You and the family have a great 2006. Bob

reply

Just curious - what it your connection to the case?

reply

I was the investigating Detective in the case. In the ovie, the detective is played by Timothy Carhart. He plays me.

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone had an update on Philip Taylor, Dr. Taylor's son? I watch this movie a lot, I even recorded it to DVD. I loved the movie, it was great. And I always wonder how that little boy is doing, growing up, etc. How old would he be now, and has anyone told him about what his father did??

reply

I'm also curious as to any updates on Teresa or Ken's family, including their son. He would be in his 20's now. I'm sad to hear Peter Maas has passed away (from the above message by Bob). I'm a true crime junkie and after seeing the movie went out and bought the book. It's one I'd highly recommend, and many of my friends who've read it have also said it's one of the best they've ever read.

reply

Tealtiger2000 - Sorry I didn't reply sooner but here's your answers. Phillip Taylor will be 22 in two months. He is employed as an EMT in the New York - Metropolitian area. He is doing very well.
He is aware of the situation with his father and mother but I'm sure he still has some questions that he may want answered. If I can be of assistance to you regarding the book/movie please let me know. Have a great summer. Bob

reply

I have probably watched this movie 1000 times (or at least everytime it's aired). I find it incredible that you were the investigating detective, and I just want to say kudos to you...I don't know how real life translates into "docudramas" but I know it takes real police work to catch real criminals.

You guys should read the book. It's a great read. It tells all about Dr. Taylor's escape attempts and where he was transfered to also, for those of you who were wondering.

reply

"If it wasn't for this he would be your regular guy. He's not a bad guy - just made a BIG mistake."

I'm not understanding this. He beat and terrified his wife, murdered her (the mother of his son!) in cold blood, tried to cover up said murder but it was just "a BIG mistake" and he's not a bad guy? How is he anything OTHER than a sociopathic scumbag?

reply

Hey, Marn128, do I know you from somewhere?

I love this movie..one of my fave TV movies of all time. I really need to read the book.

reply

I just started the book, I'm about halfway through. As with every true case made into a TV movie, there is just no way to capture every detail of what really happened, not to mention, they need to change things and names for various reasons, etc.

I really suggest reading the book if you are interested in this case. I found a copy on Paperbackswap.com

reply

Hey jrzchris-1....long time no talk with. How are you doing? Every so often I check the IMDB site to see how the comments are going. If you have ANY questions about the book or the actual investigation after you finish just let me know. Just to give you a heads-up. When you get to the part in the book about the jail guard that Taylor supposedly gave his home contents to..... Maas is WRONG on that part. Dr. Taylors parents were involved in the furniture and other contents being moved out of the home. That's the ONLY part of the entire book that's WAY OFF BASE. Talk later. Bob Fausak

reply

Hey Bob! Hope your holidays went well. I finished the book over the weekend. I saw your name all over it, which was something!

Interesting about the Taylors moving the furniture, not the jail guard. I wonder why he opted to change that fact. One thing about the book that left me scratching my head was Jean Taylor's comment near the end. Do you think SHE did to Ken what he accused Teresa of doing to Philip? It jumped out at me that she commented seeing on a talk show that some mothers did that to calm a teething child. Wouldn't she have been screaming with protest when asked about whether or not she thought Teresa was doing that?

Weird, but nonetheless, it sounds like the Whites did a great job raising Philip and that he became a happy young adult. I'm happy to have gotten my hands on a copy of the book. It really fills in a lot of spaces for those of us who only saw the movie.

Cheers in 2007!
Chris

reply

Chris - Same Happy New Year to you and your family too. Glad you replied.

First - I think the reason Taylor put the idea into Maas's head about giving the furniture to the jail guard was to try to keep his family OUT of the picture regarding the contents of the home. It's REAL easy to BLAME a corrections officer and place DOUBT on the justice system and KEEP your PARENTS out of the issue. At the time this happened, the home and the contents were under the protection (if that's the word) of a court appointed attorney for young Phillip. The court had appointed this attorney to protect the child's interest as baby Phillip was NOW the sole beneficiary of the Taylor's Estate ( (Mom is dead and Dad is now going to prison for 30 years) and would get the home, contents and any bank accounts or properties.

SO.....Mom and Dad Taylor (Ken's parents) are NOT TO HAPPY with everything that's going on so the LEAST they could get was the contents of the home.

What happened was Celeste and Jeff (Teresa's sister and bro in law) went to the home and found the home EMPTY. Even the light fixtures and electrical plates for the switches and outlets were gone - House was STRIPPED BARE. They called the cout appointed Attorney and he called me to report the theft of the contents. I investigated and spoke to a neighbor who saw the moving truck at the home while Ken's parents were STILL IN THE H0USE as they had been staying there. Another neighbor had STORED a wall unit in his garage FOR THE PARENTS. They LEFT a day or two AFTER the moving truck was there. Hummmmmmmmm.

So you tell me. As far as HIS MOM doing anything? Who knows!

I have also watched the movie every time it comes on Lifetime. I finally purchased the book used from Amazon.com last week. I am reading the book and find it facinating. I read the posts and am so glad that Phillip was raised by healthy parents. I hope that Ken never gets released from prison. Most of all, I think the White's are very special people for all that they went through to protect the child.

reply

Hi dudette181 - Glad you saw the movie and will now read the book. The book goes into much more of the trial and the custody battle. Lots of interesting manuvering by the attorneys. In the book you will read about the mystery caller (to the Manalapan police department)- Sorayda, who spoke with Taylor in the lobby of the Las Brisas hotel in Mexico. Taylor told her what occured in their casita (room) and her testimony at the trial really "put the final nail in his coffin" so to speak.
If you have any questions feel free to respond, or send a private message to me if you would like.

What I don't get is why they have different names in the film?

I only watched this for the first time last night and thought it was brilliant film.

reply

Hey MrsB2b2003 - When Peter Maas wrote the book, 6 people did not want their names used...so in writing the book Maas used pseudonyms.

Then when the producers wanted the movie rights, again, the people involved had to sign a "release" to have their REAL names used. I signed the release and so did the Taylors but most of the others involved, did NOT sign the release.. so the movie could NOT use their real names. So they made them up.

For example - Teresa's family used their real name in the book but in the movie they are the Silvano's (a pseudonym). In both the book and the movie, Ken Taylors first and second wives did NOT want their names (or the children)used...so pseudonyms were given.

It's all legal stuff.

I know that you said you saw the movie last night but have you read the book?
If not, get a copy off Ebay or Amazon.com or somewhere as it goes into a lot more history of Ken and Teresa BEFORE they met, more of the investigation and all of the trial - which was left OUT of the movie.

If you have any questions PLEASE feel to send me a private message on IMDB.

Hi brianfs - listen, you left a message on three of the boards for this movie so go to the "Get more information about the movie here" site. I will try to anserw your questions all on that board.

reply

Hello again brianfs - I could not figure out how to send a message to you on the other board....so I'm replying here. If you have any other questions for me use THAT board to contact me as it's easier and you can see other answers I have left for peolpe that may assist you. I was the investigating detective in the case.

First, I do NOT know how Ken's first wife and daughter or his second wife and daughter are. As for the White's, they are doing fine. Young Phillip is doing well and is now 23 yrs. old.

As for the reason her murdered her...only HE knows. In court we did not need a motive because it was very clear that he did it because of all the evidence against him, especially the witness in Acapalco, Mexico. If you only saw the movie..get a copy of the book as it goes more into details about Ken and Teresa's backgrounds and much more into the trial and the "mystery witness" which was NOT in the movie.

Usually on Amazon.com you can get a copy of the book for a few bucks.

Any questions plase feel free to contact me.

Hey Bob,
Was Ken sentenced to serve extra time for his attempted escapes? He was sentenced to 30 years for murdering his wife which, I believe, was 30 years ago now, and he is not listed anywhere as being a current inmate of any prison that I could find. So I wonder if he is out now and living somewhere or if his parents are dead or alive or if he is currently serving any extra time for his escape attempts. I read your post where your source died in 2001,2002? so you are no longer able to get current updates on Kenneth's whereabouts, have you found any other information since your source has died?

reply

Thanks for the email. Yes, Ken is still in prison in Virginia and from what I understand he received an extra year (3 total) for each of his 3 escape attempts. If you search the web for Virginia inmates you will NOT find him listed but he IS there. There is something that doesn't list him BECAUSE he is not actually a VIRGINIA Criminal but a New Jersey one just transferred to their jurisdiction for his safety - due to some agreement between New Jersey and Virginia. I have kept in touch with a reporter that did locate him in Virginia.

If you read some of the other posts I think they or I mentioned the supposed location of Dr. Taylor.

Thanks.......
