Not a faithful portrait, but a fun one

I enjoyed this movie - and I watch it ever few years...or so. Mostly, because it's fun to see a portrait of a liberated woman in that setting. However, I suspect that reality took a back seat on this one. Any successful artist, who was successful in their time, knows how to play the game. Artists relied on the wealthy for their daily bread - and they certainly knew how to please and how to "sale themselves." So - no - I don't think this was a faithful portrait of any sort...but it's a fun one. And personally - I found screenplay charming.

My thought as well. The casting (aside from the two main characters) was quite unusual but somehow worked well.

Accumulation of small victories may lead to big defeat.

Well just look at how the movie portrayed Marie d'Agoult.

It was a mostly made-up load of hooey, but yes, it was fun.
