Not a faithful portrait, but a fun one
I enjoyed this movie - and I watch it ever few years...or so. Mostly, because it's fun to see a portrait of a liberated woman in that setting. However, I suspect that reality took a back seat on this one. Any successful artist, who was successful in their time, knows how to play the game. Artists relied on the wealthy for their daily bread - and they certainly knew how to please and how to "sale themselves." So - no - I don't think this was a faithful portrait of any sort...but it's a fun one. And personally - I found screenplay charming.
