Lloyd Bridges cracks me up...

It's surprising since I understood he was mostly dramatic but he was absolutely hysterical in both Hot Shots movies.

I agree completely. Its a shame he passed on. I would have loved to see him do more comedies. It would have been good to see a movie with both him and Leslie Nielson acting together. I know they were both in Airplane but they didn't interact in it. But I often joke with my friends about his lines from Hot Shots.

"I can't remember if I like duck or Soup. Which one do you shoot? Duck sir! Thump. Are you okay sir? Yeah I am fine. Why what have you heard?"

Cracks me up.

reply

lloyd bridges was simply brilliant in both films. Played his parts so damn good that it really added so much to this film & its sequel.

he was defo one of the funniest actors of all time

reply

Yeah I miss the guy. The closest thing we got now is Leslie Nielson who is pretty good, bot Bridges just got the cenile old man part down and was hilarious to watch. Jeff Bridges was pretty good in the Big Lebowski and Starman.

reply

...and now we've lost Leslie too.
The world's a lot darker now, and a *lot* less funny.

reply

lol. "Dammit, which one do you shoot, soup or duck?" "Duck sir." "Sir, are you okay?" "Sure, why? What have you heard?"

"Uh Mr. President, where is your first lady?" "First lady? Hell I don't know. I can't keep track of them all. I lost my flower at the tender age of 16."

reply

"Be sure to thank Cheryl for the lovely dinner thursday night."

"But sir you werent at my house thursday night."

"Youre right, then where the hell was I, and who is this Cheryl!"..

reply

I liked the scene in hot shots 2 when he is about to fight saddam and he is about to use the rope or chanderler and he goes flying into the fire and he comes out wearing an asbesdos suit and when he is with the Japanese prime minister at the dinner

reply

LOL, yeah, I remember that. "We'll settle this the old Navy way, the first guy to die... LOSES!" XD

He's the best character

Formally known as: Random_Hero_791

reply

That he was. I like Leslie Nielsen too, but I think Lloyd is funnier. He was good in Maffia as well.

reply

I love his entrance in this movie. Acting all serious like a real top-commander, but noone brought the stairs out, and he goes down quicker than Toppers airplane.

He was brilliant, though. From his entrance and every scene forward.

"Roy? Roy!"

He was hilarious in both Hot Shots and in Airplane. Him and Leslie Nielsen are the best actors for spoof movies.

Who put that crab there? What crab their were two they work in pairs!

Oh man, Mafia is hilarious! One of those funny movies most people haven't seen.
Jay Mohr was soooo good.
Sadly most people look at movies like Mafia, Airplane and Hot Shots these days and lump them in with awful pieces of crap like Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans. It WAS a great genre of comedy, but the recent efforts have put a sour taste in the mouth.
At least we've still got the good ones of old. (Airplane, Airplane 2, Hot Shots, Hot Shots part deux, Mafia, Top Secret, the Naked Gun trilogy.)

"Holy cow! My hat blew off! Swing around. We'll pick it up."

But sir, we're on the mission!
Alright, fine! Put Rabinowitz in a life raft and have him row in circles until we get back.
But sir, it could be days!
Then put some food in the raft! My God, do I have to think of everything?

I've got a strong urge to fly,
but I've got nowhere to fly to.

reply

For me, he was the funniest part of the movie.

I like when he looks at the painting thinking it's a window- 'Look at them, no one's moving. Roy, Roy! I went to school with that man & he's been ignoring me all day.' - Mad funny!

When Block is going over the mission w/ him and the dead pan look on Benson's face when he tells him:

"I don't have a clue what you're talking about Phil, not a f-cking clue."

"I have personally flown over 197 missions, and I've been shot down every single one. Come to think of it, I never landed a plane in my life."

"If you're wondering about my pants, they ran out of material when they got to the knees so don't give me any sh-t."

Also Leslie Nielsen used to play serious/dramatic roles, but this is the best part of the kind of comedy that Zucker-Abrahms-Zucker invented in 1980 with Airplane. A character is much funnier if it says dumb things with a serious face :-)

"Admiral Benson" made me cry for laughter when he started to yell in his office against a picture on the wall, thinking that it's the window

and I love the quote:
Admiral Benson: Oh, by the way I would like to thank you for having us over for dinner the other night. Cheryl and I thought the stroganoff was marvelous.
Lt. Commander Block: But sir, we didn't have dinner the other night.
Admiral Benson: Really? Then where the hell was I? And who's this Cheryl?

This movie is very sentimental to me because I remember watching it with my Nanna before she died in 1994 and every time Lloyd Bridges said or did something she was howling with laughter.

My personal favourites were some of the smaller jokes:

"Jumpin' Jesus! They're back!" and;

Airman - "Admiral Benson!"

Benson - "Really? That's my name too!"

reply

He was very funny as Izzy Mandlebaum in Seinfeld as well, which I think may have been one of his last roles.
