Defining Nostalgia: Guys, Hook is bad but it's okay you love it.

Not a troll,

But I wish more people would be able to separate the fact that they grew up watching Hook on VHS is different from recognizing it as a good piece of cinema.

My sum up?
It's so overlong, and grating, and cheap looking, and the idea of "what would happen if Peter Pan grew up" is irritatingly in opposition to JM Barrie's vision, that Peter Pan can NEVER grow up. That's what makes Peter Pan, Peter Pan.

Nice score from John Williams.

Well I watched this recently with someone who had never seen it. She's almost 30 and liked it so it can have appeal outside of nostalgia. It sounds like you take this way too seriously like you're forcing yourself to dislike it more when you go on about the original vision. Just being a unique adaptation doesn't qualify as a flaw of a movie itself. It seems like you need to take a lesson from the theme of the film and have some imagination before trying to derail it like your opinion is fact.

This.

And I'd like to add the irony or someone saying they're trying to separate nostalgia from facts then going off on how this story defies the original vision. Sounds like their own nostalgia towards the original story clouds their judgment.

I take a lesson from the theme of this film, and watch other family films/Peter Pan adaptations that are less contrived and indulgent.

Yet it was still so much better than the pan.
