The plan is to do a short film, but if they hit $200,000 they claim they'll do a feature. $200,000 doesn't sound like a lot of money to make the kind of adventure movie they're describing.
What is the status of this project?
Do they have the necessary copyright clearances to produce this? If not, the project is at risk of being shut down by Amblin/TriStar/whoever.
All I know is what's on the Kickstarter.
As for copyright clearances, it may be that they just intend to pull a salary from the Kickstarter money but make the final film available for free viewing. So perhaps there's a technical loophole there where they're not actually making money from the film directly and think that they can get away with it?
I really don't know. I was wondering that as well.
