Snake (Spoiler)

I enjoyed the movie until the snake bite, but that unimaginative and unrealistic event turned it into a sensational melodrama that the incest reveal only added to. Why couldn't she just fall and hit her head? I know the snake bite happened in the novel, which I haven't read. Did the author use other snake symbolism in the book that justified the snake's appearance?
