Dvd

Is there any place ypu can bye this movie on DVD

reply

This movie is only available on VHS- hopefully it becomes more popular and gets recognition, and becomes a DVD with special features...but more than likely it will never do that. ~Aaron Lee (Idaho)

Yes! It was released on DVD in Japan ("hai sutorangu") in the summer of 2002, but as Region 2 with a list price of $57 / 6,000 Yen.

reply

When will it be released in the us?

Who cares about the US

reply

If there was no US, there would be no imdb.

I hate responding to 2 or 3 year-old posts, but this is one of the dumbest things I've read in awhile. The IMDb is a British site anyway.

Everyone should care

reply

I honestly think the US cares enough about itself to justify the rest of the world not giving a crap. It's not the centre of the universe like you seem to believe.

reply

It was supposed to be out long ago.

In the meantime:

I saw a sealed copy of the laserdisc:

The DVD is currently in production as of the beginning of April 2005. Alan Oltman, known more simply as Al here in Minnesota, has just returned from LA where he participated in the commentary track recording for the DVD release. He says that he didn't really say much on the tracks.

reply

I just rented it out in Japan. Someone mentioned that it is available here, I didn't even know this movie existed until I spotted it earlier this week. Very, very funny.

reply

Steve, why have you forsaken us? we need this DVD!

If I remember correctly. Many years ago in the 90's when Jim Carrey was starting to get huge....(just after Ace Ventura came out) the small production company that owned the rights to this movie re-issued it with new box art promanantly placing Jim Carrey on the cover (even though he had a bit-part.) This was to make you think Jim Carrey was in the movie no doubt and to cash in on his success. Jim Carrey sued the company and either won the rights to it, or had them (the production company) stripped of selling copies in the U.S. as I remember the local video stores couldn't replace a broken copy of theirs. (I think we had rented it one too many times!) I have seen "DVD's" floating around on the internet but I always find out they are just home recorded dubs of VHS copies. I have an old copy myself that is fading fast. I once saw a laserdisc copy on ebay and am still kicking myself for not bidding on it. If anyone out there knows of a laserdisc version, please contact me at [email protected]. I work at a video house that can transfer it to DVD. I think that's the only way were going to get a digital Region 1 copy out there in the near or distant future.

reply

Jim and Steve are buddies (Steve wrote Pet Detective etc.), if Jim owned the rights, I can't see him holding up a DVD release. I think its just priorities, a DVD of this won't make a lot of $, so it gets put on the back burner.

reply

Steve didn't write Pet Detective. He wrote and directed the sequel, When Nature Calls.

I have a Laserdisc copy I bought off of ebay about 5 years ago.

reply

I haven't seen anymore info on a DVD release. I would definitely pick this up if a DVD came out, but for now I will be transfering my LD version to DVD for easier viewing.

I believe the LD is uncut and the transfer is VHS quality.

I have a friend who was at a film festival in LA & Steve Oedekerk was a presenter. This friend met Steve backstage and Steve himself told him that he just purchased the rights to High Strung and is definitely planning on putting it on DVD THIS SUMMER (2008)! Can't wait for the bonus features!!

reply

That would be so *beep* great.....it's like a bible to my brother and me :D

reply

So, summer is over...

...where is the DVD???

reply

I transferred my VHS copy to DVDR long ago, but would pay for a real release in a heartbeat, c'mon Steve, make our day.

reply

i agree my vhs copy finally bit the dust! I would even be willing to buy the ld if anyone wants to sell a copy?

any word on the dvd release yet?

reply

still no word on a dvd release though i did hear he recorded a comentary track for it some years ago.

reply

I thinks it's high time that another post was added here to keep this candle burning. It's so funny (and disheartening) to read all the previous posts from years ago stating that; "the DVD release is definately hapenning in x amount of time!"
Maybe we need to start a petition?

He also co-wrote Bruce Almighty, and was suppose to write the now canceled believe it or not.

reply

he's also writing stretch armstrong. he's a very successful comedy screenwriter.

i don't think this dvd (or now that we are in the year 2010 and not 1998...blu-ray) will ever be released. which is sad. i've love this movie since i first saw it which had to be in like 1994. it's a classic in my mind and i would love to have a real dvd release. right now i have a dvd i made from a downloaded transfer i have, which is pretty good.

"Awesome movie quote that a million other people have but that I think is clever and original."

reply

its times like this where piracy and file sharing is a good thing for film. i was looking up lists of good mumblecore movies and someone mentioned this, saying it did things like played with the 4th wall and that it had a young jim carrey in it. so as you do i looked to see where i could get it and realised it was one of them movies stuck in pre-dvd era hell so i looked around and got a torrent of it. without the world we live in now movies like this would die out forever. sure its not dvd level but i wouldn't even be able to push this film if it wasn't for piracy.

if the dvd comes out great if not atleast i have something

reply

on steve's nerdist interview he says he's got a transfer of the movie, it's just a matter of him having the time to put it together and all. So it seems as it's been laying around for a while ready to be out but steve's being a lazyass
