Well jeepers creepers. This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen - an absolute mess - but I would be interested in why people seem to like it.
I saw it from the inside and thought the production and the finished movie were a total mess. From what I can gather, people seemed to like it because of some sort of 'magical quality' - I think this was (if it actually exists) by accident and not design.
Great film IMHO.

What I meant by the inside is that I worked on the movie for a couple of weeks (only as a lowly extra) and it was an absolute shambles - i thought that it might come together in the edit but I was wrong.

Been quite a few years since I saw it, but I thought it was a very enjoyable film. It's deliberately not in the blockbuster style, but I recall it being a charming film that I could happily watch again and again, very much in the same way that I can sit through Four Weddings and a Funeral any time it's on TV.
So, as to its rating...well, you've probably guessed that I think it's merited.
Unfortunately, Hear My Song doesn't appear to be available on DVD in the UK and, to my knowledge, it hasn't been on TV for a number of years. Hopefully it might crop up on Film4 soon and I can record it digitally.
I loved this film, too. It's hard to say why -it strikes a note of nostalgia and charm that's all too rare in films.

I enjoyed the music, both the "Jo Locke", and the not-too-diddly diddly Irish trad by Patrick Street. It had humor, love, and the refinding of lost love. It had Ned Beatty trying to be Irish but without putting on some trite Paddy accent. It had great scenery(no, not the bit with Tara naked) once we're transported to the West. It was filled with little things, like the drunk in the bar toasting Fintan & Mickey, & one of the Ryan family calling out "Yer a bullshi**er!!". Plus, how often do the Guiness tankers get to be in films? And of course, when Mickey was wondering who for fooks sake was Josef Locke, it had the great line "There won't be a dry seat in the house".
As far as the "magical quality", yes, it's there. Magic sometimes happens when you're not expecting it, like "It's A Wonderful Life", "Forrest Gump", "Kes", and "Girls Go Wild II" (just kidding on that last one).
Then and now I think it's a wonderful film.

Ok, I know this is an old post but I just saw the movie again after many years ,so here is why I like it.
The movie is gently funny in a charming way that remindes me of the "Ealing Comedies".All of the performances are excellent and belevable.It is worth noting that the film saw the debut of Tara Fitzgerald, and her potential talent is already evident in a supporting role that a less gifted actor would have made little of.The photography is beautiful making the most out of the gorgeous Irish landscape.It has a sharp,literate script full of witty one-liners to compensate for the, admitedly rather slight, plot.
All of this amounts to a rather good movie and while few would claim it was the best British film ever made,it is hugely enjoyable and well worth a viewing when ever one gets a chance.
