The Harder Way

I remember reading an article years ago with Michael J. Fox, and he mentioned how Universal had already been thinking of a franchise before "The Hard Way" came out. They had planned on calling the second installment "The Harder Way" and I think it was to have John Moss come to L.A. and be on Nick Lang's turf. Unfortunately, the original wasn't that big of a hit, so the plans were scrapped. That's too bad 'cause I think "The Hard Way" is one of the best buddy-buddy pictures. Criminally underrated!

Yeah, 220, 221, whatever it takes.

I totally agree. The chemistry between the two leads could have easily warranted a sequel. If the original had made the money. Maybe it was badly promoted at the time. Surely there are worse buddy cop movies than this that have made squillions more?

reply

Yeah when it was released in the UK, it was profiled on a film programme and said that there was already a sequel in the works.

reply

too bad they never made it

back in 98 I did a titty comedy for Skinemax. Sex Camp, ya remember it?

reply

I remember the promotion for this movie. It was Fox's "return" to comedy (his last original film was Casulties of War in '89) and Woods first real attempt at it, LL Cool J would be featured and his hit song as well, Fox and Woods went on every talk show to promote it, Fox finally did SNL in an effort to promote it...and it bombed. For some reason crowds just didn't go for it. Watching it last night for the first time in years, it is a bit long for an action/comedy. Or at least it "felt" long. Maybe Fox's star was starting to fade, although Doc Hollywood came out four months later and was a hit.

Audiences are funny.

reply

hmmmm, Back to the Future 2 came out the year before this. i guess they considered that more an action/adventure movie than comedy although its still more comedy than anything else.

but i guess they meant a full blown comedy.

reply

Honestly, not to be a troll, but this bombed because it wasn't a very good movie.

reply

It's miles better than sh!t like "Bad Boys" or "Rush Hour" and this two crap franchises were hits.

reply

MOVIE AUDIENCES SUCK! THEY DON'T A EXCELLENT MOVIE IF I BIT THEM ON THE ASS. THE HARD WAY IS AN EXCELLENT, ORIGINAL MOVIE. IT SHOULD'VE MADE BETWEEN 70 TO 80 MILLION DOMESTICALLY.

reply

Yeah it only made $65 million worldwide.Dammit,I would have loved to see The Harder Way.

This is one of the best buddy cop films out there.A nice slant on the genre that doesn't take itself seriously, good action scenes, funny dialogue/situations,great pace, and Fox and Woods' chemistry is the icing on the cake.

It's worth watching just for the scene where Fox impersonates Woods' girlfriend.I would have liked to see the outtakes from that.

reply

A sequel where Moss comes to LA would have been great.

reply

The first Rush Hour was great. Another Stakeout I could live without.

reply

I would have loved a sequel.

Sequels sometimes aren't all that good, but even if the story/writing of a sequel wasn't as good as the original, I am sure that Woods' and Fox's performances would have been stellar ~
