John Moss kept overeacting in every scene

May be it is not my type of comedy but having recently got the DVD I found it very iritating that the main characters were over acting and shouting at one a other. I enjoy Buddy cop films but this one just went over board ! Both Actors could have done a lot better then this.

Any views or comments please

The best films are made in an intelligent format.

I didn't believe that John Moss was a hard NY cop who couldn't open up about himself - if that were true, then he should be grizzled and emotionless, but instead he was constantly shouting and speed-talking. I'm not sure what James Woods was going for, but I didn't believe Moss was the character described to us.

Moss was trying to stop smoking during the film. Anyone who has dealt with someone trying to stop smoking has seen this kind of behaviour in people.

ummm. James Woods was being.. James Woods? I mean.. at his best, comedically, he's always been the manic.. almost throttle a guy kind of character.. even in ANIMATION (check out Hercules).

Granted.. he has done slower more deliberate characters.. but John Moss was not a creamy calm centered kind of guy. He was a high strung New York cop on probably the toughest case of his career, saddled with some Hollywood puke who wants to BE him throwing him OFF his case that he busted his ass for.. the guy is just invading every facet of his life.. AND he's quitting smoking (and doing a bad job most of the time at that.. lol).

For the tone of the flick.. I thought Woods was great.. playing the manic energy.. to MJ's almost cool.. trying to be very.. tough character (which he wasn't). Not saying its the greatest film ever. but definitely always wanted to see these 2 guys in another flick together.

Woods usually plays someone who is snotty and speed-talking. From what I read, his behavior is rather method.

James Woods was meant to play a James Woods character, only this time play it for laughs. Michael J. Fox knew this and was worried he'd be acted off the screen, and actually sought advice from Michael Caine before the filming so that wouldn't happen. Ebert described it best in his review, "You have to listen really fast during this movie, but what you get is an earful of James Woods in full flower, and Michael J. Fox so hyper he ventilates."

I agree with most of the posters who replied: it's just James Woods being James Woods. He often plays manic, OTT characters (like Carrey, in a different style, or like Joe Pesci and Steve Buscemi, who often are cast as motor-mouths).

Comedy or drama, Woods often gives a really intense performance.

I agree with the OP. I like JW, but his role is annoying as hell. And Fox as movie star is so ridiculous.

he was over the top and you can really see that it is acting. He's dramatic and it's not real. It's great!
