Director got it all wrong

This movie, although not that well known, is nevertheless one of my favorites and pretty much defines the aura of a hip young crew of four hanging out in Manhattan during the Dinkins-era (early 1990-91)and all the situations they run into while trying to have as much fun as they could muster; bought back memories, that's for sure. There is only segment of the film which I strongly disagree with and which Director Joseph Vasquez should have been a little more knowledgeable with: the character of Fernando, played by Nestor Serrano, longs to be "an Italian by the name of Vinny". In the part where they are caught by transit police, and one cop starts inquiring on Fernando's "persona", the cop tells Fernando that "he could never be Italian...that HE (the cop) was a real Italian..." EXCUSE ME!!! But real Italians are NOT THAT WHITE LOOKING EITHER!!!!! In fact, Nestor Serrano could pass MORE for Italian than that idiot cop, who looks more "Anglo" than anything else! (Remember, Italians are considered "Latin" just like Spaniards and Portugese)I have many Italian friends, whose background ranges from Bari, to Milan, to Roma (Rome) down to Sicily (Sicilianos), and NONE OF THEM RESEMBLE THAT COP....N O N E! On the contrary, they are all from light olive to dark complexions, with very dark to sometimes dark blonde hair! Fernando, in fact, could be among them easy! Director Vasquez screwed up major! Major!! Otherwise, the rest of the movie was, in my book, outstanding. (Whew! Glad I got that out of my chest!!)

I think the director chose an extremely anglo looking actor to make a stonger point and further juxtapose vinny's hipocracy. yes, its true vinny looks more italian than the pale cop-but that's the point! No matter how much vinny looks and acts the part, "He could never be Italian." And yes even though there are more olive complected italians there are definitely anglo looking 'real italians.'

Yeah you really missed the point of that scene. First, you have many Italian friends and that's so impressive. But they are other Italian people in the world besides your friends. I know Italians with pale skin, blond hair, red hair who can easily pass for Irish or German. But no matter what they look like, they are Italian. Second, as the cop told him, no matter what Fernando will never be Italian. He looks very Italian, he talks like an Italian, he can pass for Italian but he will never be Italian. The officer no matter what he looks like is Italian.

I grew up in Brooklyn, NY in the mid 80s back when the "Howard Beach" incident practically segregated the urban areas. Wandering into the "italian" section of Queens to go to certain arcades...I recall PLENTY of Italians that looked like that guy. So I disagree with the OP.

The only thing I think the director got wrong was the way our 4 heroes DRESSED! I don't remember my black & PR friends heading to a club or go 'where the ladies are' with such horrible apparel. I'm NuYorRican & I think we dressed a little better than that on a Friday night on the town. I don't care if it WAS the early 90s.

Italians from the north of Italy have blonde hair and blue eyes. Italians from the south have dark hair and olive skin. Just because you didn't know any lighter skinned Italians didn't mean anything. I've heard there are Asians with curly hair, but I haven't seen any, but they exist.
