Those are the words to describe this movie. The Puerto Rican guy who wanted to be Italian really did it for me. First of all, why would he want to be Italian and Black at the same time. Two, John Leguizamo's character was downright stupid, and three, the acting in the movie was rookie level acting.
I don't see how Vinny was trying to be "Black". It seemed he was more trying to NOT be Puerto Rican than anything else. The Italian thing was just to compliment the John-Travolta-NY-ladies-man stereotype. To me he was just being typical the a-hole "Noo Yawker". Perhaps "being" Italian was the sh!t back then. Besides, being "black" back in the late 80's in NYC was all but desired. "Ghetto Fabulous" definitely didn't exist back then.
As for Leguizamo's character, he's just the opposite of Vinny. The character trait difference was part of the plot and nesscessary. Without the "Johnny" character there would be no story.
From the get-go, you shouldn't have been expecting an Oscar performance. IMO this was more of a Comedy-Drama than a Drama-comedy. Also, three of the four main actors are comedians(Joyner, Leguizamo, and Doug E.Doug). I thought they did well considering that fact.
I know it's a little late but good post! I agree with you 100% These types of movies Hangin' With.... Livin' Large,Strictly Business,Mo Money, etc accompanied the rash of "hood" movies (or should I say QUALITY hood movies)of the early 90's. Boyz,Juice,New Jack,Menace,South Central.
