Yes, this movie is very funny and down-to-earth. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and I can see these “characters” in my former friends and classmates. I had my share of “black militants” to ethnic/racial fakers. I believe one can find individuals like these more easily in urban areas, but I’m also sure they exist everywhere. As for acting black or white, I’ve always laughed at the concept. The stereotype is simple: white cultured; black uncultured. Rarely, have I heard refined and mannered East Indians or Asians spoken of as “trying to be white.” To me, it is simple: some wish to follow society’s “norms” and some wish to be part of the “in crowd.” Those who were a part of the “in crowd” from my classmates to my family, usually found themselves “in trouble,” pregnant or “in jail.” Now that may seem like a simplistic or narrow minded view on things, but people, generally, just pretend things are more complicated. More things in life are cut and dried than we care to hear.
Love this movie!!! I am currently in a movie marathon, much to the annoyment of my girlfriend! My favorite line is at the end with Tommy calling Willie a bum, telling him that he was going to make it regardless of his putdowns. I wonder if they met up the next Fri. night...?
