Great Movie Should On DVD!!!

Well! Where to begin now! This movie is a work of art. All 4 hours of it in fact. But, leave it to the movie studios to 'NOT' make something so wonderful available on DVD. Yet, they tend to make garbage available to us in no time. I guess part of the problem, actually most of the problem is that the majority of people buy into the pop culture of movies. Hence, pop culture will ensure that we watch garbage on a regular basis since that seems to be what people want to pay to watch the most anyway. Intelligent, artistic, powerful movies such as this one end up not seeing the light of day since people are focused on seeing/buying crap like "Malibu's Most Wanted", etc. (Need I say More?).

I definitely agree. On a tangent -- how did you see this movie? Are prints available? I have a 4-VCD version -- I have no recollection how I got it.

reply

Yeah I got my VCD off eBay, it pops up there every now and then. Sure could use a remastered print to replace this hunk of crap though, I can't read the subtitles whenever something white shows up behind them, and they occasionally go off the frame. This masterpiece needs to be in a watchable format!

There is a version available on DVD at superhappyfun.com. I have not seen it, so can't attest to the quality (it might simply be a DVD of the same low quality transfer) but plan to purchase it sometime soon. They have many other interesting films never released in the US.

Does anyone have any suggestions on finding any of the other older Edward Yang films?

MAHJONGG and A CONFUCIAN CONFUSION are both available on the eDonkey network. I know of no other distribution of these films!

Assuming you wound up getting it from Superhappyfun, did it turn out to be the four-hour cut or the three-hour cut? (Does anybody else know)

Thanks,
Tom

I did eventually get this and yes: it's around 4 hours. And it's well worth having: the subtitles and picture leave something to be desired, but this version is better than nothing!

i just recently saw it on screen at the museum of modern art in new york. they were doing an edward yang retrospective. the print seemed pretty good to me, even though the subtitles were a bit difficult to read at times. it was a such an incredibly beautiful film, though. i feel like seeing in in a theater has been one of the seminal experiences of my life. it's infuriating that this isn't on dvd.

i should be sincerely sorry to see my neighbor's children devoured by wolves.

Scorcese's company is remastering a print now and updating subtitles etc. Criterion have confirmed they'll be releasing it, hopefully it won't take too long to finally get this as a legit release!

This should be on Criterion.
