I am extremely jealous of anyone who gets to see this on the big screen as these lucky people do!

Did anyone reading this board see this screening? Which version was shown? Four hour or three?

reply

Four, I believe. There is a screening in Toronto (where I live) coming up soon but I have no idea when. Somewhere between January and March, and along with all of Yang's other films.

That would be great news, if it's true, because the four hour version has been tied up in legal trouble for a while now, although I know that Criterion (amongst others) has been trying to untangle it. If it was the four hour version, we might be able to look forward to a DVD in the near future.

You're a lucky person getting a full Yang retrospective - some of his stuff is pretty rare. If you go along (or if you know someone who does), can you put a note here confirming which version of this film is shown, please?

reply

I have some good news, and some bad news.

The good news is that the retrospective is showing the full film, and all his films. The bad news is that I'm away during the retrospective and can only re-watch A Brighter Summer Day and watch Mahjong. Very disappointing, considering I was looking forward to this for a long time.

Excellent news, Panda. One word of warning, though. I attended screenings of "ABSD" at both MoMA in New York and the NFT in London, and both promised the full version. On both occasions, it was revealed, only at the last minute (ie after everyone had bought their tickets), that the three hour version was the one to be shown. So do report back here, please, with the (I hope) joyous news that someone has finally acquired the rights to the full version.

And even just the chance to watch "Mahjong" makes you a lucky person indeed.

I hope you enjoy it.

It was the full version! However, the print wasn't in that great of a condition; it was filled with scratches and there were Chinese along with the English subtitles.

It was as if the shame of it should outlive him.

reply

Did you still enjoy it, though? Someone on another thread said they had seen it recently in San Francisco, and that the print was not in good condition. They reckon it might be the only print left of the full version...

Catch it while you can, seems to be the message, warts and all.

Yes, I think I appreciated it much more this time around; how Yang uses his frame is just incredible. This probably is the only print available of the full version (or maybe the only available for showing?) but I think after a restoration job it would look much better. The print wasn't bad at all, even though it wasn't in a good condition it was still stunning to watch the film on the big screen.

By the way, I think The Terrorizers is available in a good print (I watched a version from online that was in pretty good condition because it aired on television).

It was as if the shame of it should outlive him.
