#2 on Cinespect's top ten list, 2011

"A Brighter Summer Day” originally came out in Taiwan in 1991, but it made its U.S. premiere this year. Edward Yang’s beautiful epic mural depicting the cultural and political identity issues of Taiwanese youth in early-1960s Taipei is a show-stopper that’s as entertaining as Spielberg, and as rhetorical and emotional as a southern Baptist preacher on a hot Sunday in the summer.
