Why Is This Movie Not Out On DVD?

Are there issues with the rights?

reply

I'm afraid the answer to that is a great big yes. This is a four hour film (in its full version), which took about four years to make, so financing and distribution deals were done somewhat on the hoof. I understand that Yang was trying, at the time of his death, to bring the various parties together, but obviously, sadly, never made enough headway. It is said that this film is at the very top of Criterion's wish list to release (in the wake of "A one and a two"), but that it is just too complicated to sort everything out. Without Yang around now to ease matters, I believe this one's going to take some organizing.

It's also worth pointing out that both the recent public screenings that I'm aware of (at MOMA in New York and at the NFT in London) were of the shorter version, so, basically, if you want to see this film at the moment, you'd better give superhappyfun your money.

Wow, I didn't know this movie was censored until I read this thread. I just recently saw the four hour version of this film at the Asian American Festival in SF. The print is old and the subtitles occasionally go out of frame. It's sad because it's probably the only print left in existence. Great movie!

Criterion is in the process of transferring this film, but their expecting it'll take years to sort it all out. Hopefully it is worth the wait!

I've recently read that Criterion have already prepared the extra material for their release. Also that the film is due to screen on TCM US this month, which suggests that a release may be sooner rather than later. Perhaps within the next year - although I'm not holding my breath but this astonishing film needs to be widely available, and in the print that it deserves.

I was waiting for the broadcast on TCM (well, hoping a friend in the US would record it for me), but it seems to have been cancelled.
