Does the Apollo Diner actually exist in NYC?

i think they quickly say 9th ave & 23rd st in the movie & yes there is a diner there on the corner, but it's not named the apollo
i lived around the corner from there when the movie came out & i do remember reading in a mag or newspaper back then that pacino worked in the kitchen at that diner to get a feel for his role & that customers out front did not know he was back there learning the ropes...
