Am I the only one who thinks that Johnny comes off as being a stalker?

great film, but Johnny comes off as being an obsessed and desperate stalker

He was a bit intense and I can see how Frankie was kind of embarassed by his attention....he was a bit annoying at times too.
I don't think he was quite as bad as that though! He knew what he wanted and he went for it.
Now if Frankie was'nt interested at all, then he probably could be called a stalker.

I LOVE THIS FILM

It's because she did seem so uninterested in him so many times that he came across as such a stalker. But it was also his annoying mannerism. His cold, blunt, straightforward attitude came across as very manipulating.

Maybe if the character of Johnny was played by a softer warmer character say, like Mark Ruffalo or some other such like actor the film would have been better. (Okay, I admit it, I'm not a fan of Al Pacino but I liked the story of this film.)

I didn't think he came across as a stalker. Johnny was just trying to convince Frankie to give their relationship a chance, but he probably have moved on if she hadn't been interested.

Al's character did it in a light and fun way. he made Michele's character curious, he made it work the way he did it.

I thought exactly the same. I have a suitor that I dont like at all, and he is always asking for a date, checking and commenting my pics in facebook (I have considered to block him, but I dont want to be that mean), even tought I already have told him that I am not attracted to him. But I think Frankie was attracted to him also, if not she was also desperate to accept him at the end.

Absolutely. Johnny is this intense, nagging, ever-present, always-talking annoying character. I couldn't believe how annoying he was - showing up to her bowling night and just being an attention-hog. His character has serious issues and his it makes the whole story unbelieveable and fall apart. He just can't chill out and give her the space she needs. No wonder she flipped out on him so much - it's completely justified. Johnny is a jerk.

I love this movie and am a major Michelle fan...but the "smothering" that Johnny did was a bit much to me...he could have come across as a stalker type...folks need their space...

He also showed up to her place uninvited. Granted, she said "I don't know - I might have said I'd go with him to this thing." ; but I still think it was very stalk-ish to just show up to her place.

And how did he know where she lived anyway ? I forget the exact sequence of events, but I don't think she had shown him her place before he showed up there, did she ?

He looked up the address on her time card.

I think the whole point is that they are both extremely flawed people, however their flaws are not the kinds that they have been hurt by in the past. Johnny sees this as almost a lifeline for his lovesick soul, as he knows he is not the type of guy who is satisfied with short term relationships and one night stands. He has his baggage, but he is the type of person who gives 100% of himself in a relationship and would never hurt Frankie, he goes out of his way to take care of her and make her feel safe, which is the feeling she is very uncomfortable with. To be honest, I felt like if this relationship wasn't given a chance Frankie would have NEVER dated again(ending up old and alone) and Johnny probably would have ended his life because he knew himself well enough to know that he could not face having no love in his life, as he is a lyrical soul.
Overall, the movie is about the desperation that confronts people when they realize they might end up alone and unloved at the end of their life.
