That was not love

there is no way Johnny experienced true love for Frankie. he was just a lonely bloke in need of some companionship. He looked around at his work-place and 'Chose' to like the prettiest girl there, which is not surprising at all. Johnny and Frankie have absolutely nothing in common. they don't converge at any level. true love makes you care a lot about details like how when and where you wan to tell the other person that you actually love him/ her. you want the whole thing to be memorable and ideal. Johnny was way too instinctive and didn't care much about the other person. there was a lot of selfishness motivating Johnny's attraction to Frankie. She was pretty, accessible at work and her refusal made it an interesting challenge.

Yeah, its a daft film devoid of any real emotion.

Not everyone feels that a particular setting makes things romantic and memorable. Especially in NYC, there are too many people everywhere, and she was always whining and pushing him away, I would be cautious about what I said in public, with someone like that. That said, Michele Pfeiffer wasn't really great with this type of role to begin with (acting like she was the star of her school play, until the last 1/2 hour) so I can see why you'd think they had nothing in common, because it was just gross to see her and him "acting" like they cared about each other when they first got together...

If Johnny wouldn't love her he would not go through all this *beep* for Frankie....

Did we see the same movie? The only thing Michelle acted was that of a frustrated, lonely and bitter young woman who had been deeply hurt. Her performance was praised all over the world, but here you are claiming she wasn't really great with this type of role?

You're not really great at assessing actors.

They had different personalities but they both needed each other. What makes love last and go beyond pure attraction and stomach butterflies is how two people fulfill each others needs emotionally and that's why people with different personalities often last the longest, because they fulfill each others "holes" so to speak.

I agree. The chemistry was lacking between them. The movie is terrible.

I disagree. Love isn't always same for everyone, and love isn't always easy. If a person has difficult past, it may change a lot of things.

I believe it was love between them but Frankie just had own difficult past which hindered her to accept own feelings.

I agree--with Michelle Pfeiffer as Frankie, Johnny is just a lonely guy hitting on a pretty girl.

I'm surprised no one else has pointed out to you that the role of Frankie was meant for Kathy Bates, and when you watch the movie picturing Kathy Bates as Frankie, the whole movie takes on new meaning! Everything makes sense.

Don't blame anything but the casting! It was a controversial decision at the time, big news, and everyone has just forgotten about it!
