WOW! What a great movie!

I just finished watching this. My Mom had always told me that I needed to, but I never really got around to it. So when I saw it on Netflix Instant I thought, "oh, yeah, I should watch that!" I have a 3 month old son - I bottle feed him and pump my breast milk, so I watch a lot of TV.

Anyway, I loved it. It was an incredibly movie! I can't believe I never got around to watching it before.

Yours in Christ,
~Molly~

Oh, it's okay. Yeah.. just okay. Slightly cheesy. I wouldn't say it deserved any Oscars. With the exception of the period scenes (meaning the scenes that were supposed to have taken place in the 40s, 50s, 60s...), it hasn't aged wonderfully. The aging make-up was terrible, although Caan's was slightly better and more believable than Midler's. I couldn't help but think that they'd have done a much better job with the make-up on the "older" Dixie and Eddie today. It was worth seeing once, but it's not really worth a repeat viewing, IMO.

I thought it was interesting how Dixie changed her mind and came out on Stage, after all. She told of how she watched her son die right in front of her eyes. Wnen My mom & I caught that scene, My heart ripped out! They are who I definitely and totally support in our Nation, today!

The film was moving and powerful. Midler and Caan were awesome!

Yes, the aging makeup could have been better, but overall, I think this is a wonderful film.

I love this film immensely, and was glad to share it with my daughter tonight. But I cannot watch it very often - it affects me too much. I think it's a very underrated film with incredible performances by a great supporting cast.

Just recently re-watched this, and I still think it's a wonderful movie. It could have had about 15-20 minutes trimmed to make it tighter....and as others have said, the makeup didn't hold up well (though it was 20 years ago). But the heart and soul of the film is truly beautiful. Agree with some other posters on the board that Bette should have earned an Oscar for her performance.

James Caan made an earlier movie with James Earl Jones which was good. It was called "Gardens of Stone. They were members of "The Old Guard" at Arlington National Cemetery. It takes place during the Viet Nam war. They were veterans who try to talk a much younger soldier from going to Viet Nam.
