Something wrong with this picture...

Why is Nicole Kidman HUGE on the cover of this movie? Yeah, she's got a decent role in this movie, but she is not the star. I hate when they do that, a super-star happens to be in a older movie, so they put them on the cover, even if they have a role that only counts for 5 minutes of screen time. Why is the main character, the boy, not on the cover, isn't he the star? Grrrrr.

reply

I hear ya. That annoys me, too. She was hardly even in the film and anyone really could have played her role.

reply

Unfortunately that's how Studios try to market DVDs.

reply

Naomi Watts played a small role as one of Tandewe's friends in this film...hopefully now that she's hit it big her picture won't end up on future covers along with Kidman's.

reply

No matter what, it works!

I rented this movie because of Nicole Kidman, and although the movie was good, I felt frustrated.

reply

I got the movie because of Thandie Newton and Noah Taylor, the true stars and talents of the movie. Those two were AWESOME!

Truth about me: "Timid and shy and scared am I of things beyond my kin."

Off topic...

I thought the last word of your quote from Sound of Music was 'ken', not 'kin'. To 'ken' something is to know of it. With the last word being 'kin' it makes you sound like a racist.

Just saying.

Recognize some people (apart from misspellers) are not aware the word 'ken' exists and are interpreting with the vocabulary they possess. That may account for the spelling variation. In the movie I saw, Liesl says 'ken'. I'm going to assume if she were meant to say another word she would have been corrected by the director.

Also be aware that kin is a larger word than 'family'.

I am simply attempting to caution you.

Well, I think you guys are right.
N.Kidman really didn´t´have ahuge part, but I do think she did it very well and was extremely credible as mean ice queen having a softer spot inside... I do not think anyone could have played it.
But yes, the stars of this movie were Noah and Thandwe.
I also wanted to mention that Iloved Naomis part in it. It was small but so adorable. Naomi seemed so innocent and really cute with the tissues stuffed in her bra just because she didn´t have pockets. *lol*

A really great movie with two awesome main characters beautifully showing that love can happen with and to anyone.,..

By the way, I think it´s kinda funny Nicole´s character was Nicola. *gg*

reply

That's true. I wonder how the orginal cover looked. My bet is that Nicole isn't on the poster. Nicole had a small part.

reply

Interestingly..... I remember the "video" box of this movie....
Sadly.... Nicole was already somwhat of a star when it came out then too....
She had already been in "Days of Thunder" with Tom Cruise... the next year "Far and Away".
If I remember correctly she is on the cover..... not really a close up of her face, but it is a picture focused on her.

i really don't understand the front. i imagined noah taylor and thandie newton on the front. but nope. it's nicole kidman. so weird. it's so not all about her. its all about the 2 main characters.

reply

well noah taylor is a fairly well known actor, at least in australia, i dont know so much about america. i mean, he was in almost famous, the tomb raider films, the life aquatic... he played hitler in some film where he co-starred with john cusack. so it's not like he's an unknown.

reply

The majority of people in the u.s. who are white are going to be attracted to a caucasian blonde.. it is also a familar face. People judge a book by its cover. It's a marketing tool.

Somebody's got to lead this revolution and I guess it's gonna be me.

reply

The original (theatrical) poster was a still of the shot where Noah Taylor and Thandie Newton's characters are sitting on a bench, with their friends. (The scene in the film when she says, "We're only flirting.") No Kidman at all.

At least, that was the poster in my country.

Interesting. I didn't know the word "ken" is in the English language. Anyone familiar with German will be able to tell you "kennen" is the German verb for "to know"--not as in to know what time it is, but to be familiar with.

reply

you're right about 'ken'

reply

I wondered that, too.
I saw the movie on the television once and fell in love with the movie, so I decided to buy it. I went to a movie store that sold a lot of the older movies. I went into the sections, looking for it like crazy. I didn't know the exact name of the movie (all I remembered was that it started with an 'F'), but figured it would have the stars on the front of it, so I'd know it when I saw it. I passed by the movie at least three times before I went to the front to ask if they even had it in stock. The guy takes me to the movie and I'm looking at it, then him, because I'm like, why is Nicole Kidman on the front? She was in the movie like a total of 15 minutes, maybe a bit longer. He said he had no idea why, but she was a little famous at the time, so maybe that was why.
I hate when they pick one actor (who is big, now) out of an old movie and put them on the front cover (or instead of a good description of the movie, they gush about this one star who's in it) and most of the time, they are in small supporting roles or barely in it at all.

reply

Lol- My sentiments exactly...

Why?

"...the young man would love it too, but he can't afford it."

reply

Folks... read the trivia for this movie... she's big on the cover because she had just gotten famous in Dead Calm and was being courted by American studios, namely Tom Cruise. And of course they needed to draw people to the movie with a big name.

interestingly, Nicole recommended Thandiwe for the female lead in Tom's second Mission Impossible...
Noah Taylor was in another Nicole Kidman production, as a fellow prisoner in Bankok Hilton (great series! You might still be able to see it on Youtube) as well as Tom's movie Vanilla Sky.
