Were the Five Heartbeats a real group?

No they wernt. They were based on 60's african american groups and the struggles they had to go through.

I'm thinking that the movie was based on THE DELLS

The movie was loosely based on the career of The Dells. That's why it shows their picture while the credits roll.

There were a lot of fact based incidents that occured during the movie.

I've also read they were also very loosely based on the Temptations. I'm sure both the Dells and Temps have stories related, since the music business in the 50's and 60's were very corrupt. Well, I suppose the business still is, but there are now many ways for the a group/artist to hang on to their money.

The plot of the film is loosely based on the lives of several artists: The Dells, The Temptations, Four Tops, Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Frankie Lymon, Sam Cooke and others.
