Good movie but....

It reeked of early 90's gimmicks. When I used to watch this movie as a little girl, I always thought it looked like a 1990's movie pretending to be in the 1950's era.
Whenever I used to watch The Godfather as a little girl, I was fooled and did not realise until I was older that it was not a 1950's movie filmed in color.
The five heartbeats is a great movie, but like Dirty Dancing, it does not really capture the essence of the period that they are trying to capture.
For example, the opening musical scene in which the group (not The Five heartbeats) takes off all their shirts and exposes bulging muscles.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but musical groups of that era were very refined and never really took off their shirts as if they were chippendale dancers.
Or when the young girl breaks out into song and sings the song while cleaning, that song sounds like an R&B song from the 90's not the 50's.
Overall, it takes away from the viewing experience a bit, but this movie will always hold a special place in my heart being that it makes me feel a strong sense of nostalgia.

You are absolutely right! I saw the same thing, the little girl was definitely talented but not singing in that time period. The keytar, the taking off of the shirts, and a lot of the music had too much keyboard/synthesizer/drum machine influence but that being said, I still loooooved the movie!!!
