Where I fell in love with Mercedes Ruehl

This movie was the first time I had seen her, and I loved how she played her character. When she won her Oscar for her role, I practically cried

i fell in love when i saw her in those dresses

Yeah, I loved her wardrobe too. She looked great in those snug dresses/skirts with the shimmery tights and heels. Got a laugh out of Robin Williams calling her over to the table repeatedly just to check her out.

She won an Oscar for this, why? She played a stereotypical girlfriend who overdresses and is oversexy and smoking inappropriately, and no one else is smoking. She's a caricature. Maybe she did it well and certainly she was very watchable.

Not criticizing her or her acting skills. Not qualified to do that. I see that she was as emotionally expressive as possible for this role. I jsut don't get what's so special about this performance.

I just saw this movie and I didn't know she won an Oscar. I actually thought she was really good and joked inside myself thinking: "Wow, she should get an Oscar for this. But ofc these type of roles don't win Oscars".

15 mins later, I read this.

Yep, best supporting actress. I guess we were both wrong in a way, you saying these types of roles don't win. But like I said, I donno why she would have won it and I don't claim to be knowledgeable about acting. So what did you see in it that made you think she should win? I'm curious.

She won, for the same reason Robin Williams should have won Time's Man Of The Year award back in '14.Both fooled the critics in a way that few other performers ever do. Mercedes hoodwinked them into thinking her acting was something to write home about, and Williams bamboozled them into believing that his demise was a loss to the dramatic arts

reply

because she found the humanity in the character. did you stop the movie after the first hour or something?

reply

I thought she did very well. It sounds like you perhaps have some biases at play, "girlfriend who overdresses and is oversexy and smoking inappropriately...". I don't get into awards and who should have won what year or care who the competition was. But that she stood out playing a role that could just have been a typical girlfriend role is why she got noticed.
