I personally thought that the woman,Isabel(Greta Scacchi) was an idiot, and I would have chosen the sizzling hot and kind-hearted Sam over the emotionally passive and distant husband any day.
That is the main reason that this movie didn't work for me because it was clearly a wonderful love story short-circuited by an unbelievable conclusion when she chose her husband. I think if her lover had also been Cuban-born, then this ending would have never happened!
Would you forgive a man or woman if you were in a relationship with them and while you were incarcerated they started dating someone else? Would you date someone who was married and their spouse was incarcerated?
I loved Jimmy Smits in this movie as he made you feel he was truly the character not an actor playing the role.
I would never want to pick between 2 men and being in love with 2 men at the same time can not be easy on a woman. You make one choice and it does not work out then the other road is no longer available for travel. Example: she picks her husband and then he breaks the law and is incarcerated again and the other guy is no longer available. I personally would not be 2nd to anyone but if a guy picked another woman over me- I would never get in a relationship with him again (other than friendship). My point being-- if I was the woman-- I would want a guarantee that my husband would not be foolish again and become incarcerated.
