Cost

I love the movie, it's one of my favorites but ... The extravagance of the wedding was ridiculous . Swans, moving out all of the furniture , tents , etc. totally unnecessary . The wedding George wanted ( BBQ backyard wedding ) wasn't a good idea either, but they shouldn't have been so extravagant . It's only one day , marriage is hopefully for life. Keep it nice but not crazy.

Agreed. If they kept it close to the original number of 500 something guests, that's A LOT of money at $250 a head!

But remember, he insisted they cut it down to 150. I assumed they did so because 572 would be just ridiculous. They'd need a huge hotel ballroom for an event that size, their house isn't large enough. Even if they got it to 200, that's 50K which is outrageous to me but kind of in line for the upper middle class coastal set.

Lots of things were silly in the movie, I guess they did it for effect. I thought it was crazy to have such an upscale reception in a home, they should have had it in a banquet room.

It is no longer expected that the bride's father pays for everything. Nowadays the bride & groom should have the wedding they can afford, and if they get money from family, it is a bonus.

Silly is one thing .. outrageously stupid is another. Too bad they went for the latter.
