'Enchanted' early 90's trends I'd love to see revived

This movie reminds me of that short trend window in early 90's, American culture, that challenged late 80's excess -- sort of like the embracing of Nature that took place in the late 1800's, with the formation of The National Parks. Some of the things in "Enchanted April" that tied-in nicely with early 90's trends:

- The revival of early 20's styles and Asiatic prints, likely influenced by Japan's quickly blooming economy. I love the elegant Japanese-type prints and kimono attire scattered throughout the film and it's integration into Brit-influenced prints and styles.

- Natural fabrics and "earth tones" against the brightness and color of the natural setting. I love the cream-on-tan outfits of Lady Caroline, the sepia-toned clothing of Rose and lottie. It feels fresh and emphasizes the green lushness of the surroundings.

- "Earth Day; Everyday". The film "Enchanted April" should be every environmental activist's secret weapon to remind people of the tranquility and beauty that can be had and valued in greenspace and natural settings. We needs parks. We needs wooods, paths and beaches. To see people re-discover their lives and loves in a place of great, natural beauty gives such a feeling of renewal and acts as a reminder of what we should never take for granted, abuse or leave behind. Earth doesn't "need" us; we need it.

- The excitement of face-to-face socializing and groups on vacation. As much as people need Nature, they also need other people -- to thrive, to confide in, to feel a sense of possibility and renewal. With all the financial problems and violence currently racking The World, it seems trends have leaned towards isolation, reliance on technology over in-the-flesh interactions and a gloomy sense of suspended animation. It costs very little to take a walk in a park nd explore natural settings and we, as communities, should demand that it always remains that way. Forests are important, parks remind us that fun and socializing doesn't always require a big wallet (even if "Enchanted April" takes place in a castle -- the ladies were economizing and there are plenty of beautiful, historical properties around The World that are open to the public for tours or exploration, often at little to no charge.)

What do you love about "Enchanted April", what do you think ties it to the period it was made in (1991-92) and what styles, trends and themes from it, would you like to see revived in, both, pop and "high" culture?

You just reminded me of some of the nicest outfits I ever had, in beautiful flowing cotton and softly coloured prints.

I think that requires a search for an updated version of those outfits -- or some replicas :)! A good design is a good design, regardless of when it was made. Some of the costumes in this film were really beautiful.

Such a beautiful and insightful post -- thank you!

The following has nothing in common with the movie per se, but it's in line with the "humanity matters far more than money" spirit of the early 90s: A lot of music had a 1960s-coffeehouse-tinged feel to it -- ex.: The Washington Squares.
