I wonder why Fred didn't recognize Elizabeth?

At the end when Fred was the friend of the new girl. It was like he didn't remember her at all. Any ideas?

reply

Maybe he did. Obviously he can hear her and see her but it's unknown if he remembers her or not.

Fred moved on to help someone else, she needs to move on as well. Maybe he remembers, maybe he's just reminding her....

reply

I think he recognizes her, he is just giving all his attention to the new girl. Plus what was he gonna do, say hi to her? She couldn't see him anymore.

reply

I don't think he has forgotten her, but like others have said she couldn't see or hear him, so why try and acknowledge her? It would only confuse the new little girl. But maybe he chose Mickey's daughter in order to stay close to Elizabeth?

reply

I like to think that was why he chose her to.

reply

Well I think the idea is that Fred, as an imaginary friend, was never meant to be tagging along with an adult. He's meant to help kids. But he's stuck with Elizabeth until she finally declares her independence from her mother and all her insecurities. In the end, Elizabeth not only frees herself, but frees Fred as well to move on to another charge. So it's not that he doesn't remember, it's that the proper balance has been restored.

I think he did, but she can't see him anymore and she doesn't need him. Now he's needed by another child, he was with Lizzie for a long time, right until she was an adult so in this case I think he cares about her and their relationship is different than his relationship with the other children he has 'looked after' but he can do nothing more in her life, at least he can be close to her

Also, why didn't Mickey recognize the name when Natalie said 'Drop dead fred'? He obviously remembered it since he mentioned him when he first ran into Lizzie at the start of the film.
Bugs me.
