Favorite Part

What was everyone's favorite part? One of mine was when they were ordering food... I'm sure all of you know why. :-p

"Oh No, Taking care of the maggots is MY job."

- Rose singing What Have They Done To The Rain. Very haunting. When Eddie begins to understand the meaning of the song, his facial expression changes chillingly, and I honestly thought that he would die in the War. For a brief moment, I forgot that the film was being told in flashback. Great chemistry, brilliant acting.

- Rose and Eddie kissing for the first time, clumsy, passionate, unsure, needing, wanting. Having the musical boxes play simultaneously was also haunting, symbolic. Cold, mechanic, frozen figures jerkingly rotating to melodically discordant music, creating a mesmerizing texture of soft tangly sounds; the passionate lovers refused to be affected by these outside forces, and kissed...

- The entire restaurant sequence, from the jacket dilemma to the ordering.

- Eddie smearing lipstick on Rose, and Eddie trying to prevent her from entering the club. He realizes she's too pretty, he's already fallen in love with her...

- The sequence of Rose and Eddie going to bed together.

- Eddie finally leaving Rose, running in the dusky twilight down (up, rather...) that vacant, silent, rolling San Francisco highway towards the Bay Bridge and his marine deployment; the highway appears to spill into the dazzling inky blue Pacific Ocean; River recedes from the dark night into the inky dusky blue unknown with the Bridge looking endlessly on; gorgeous, haunting cinematography.

- Eddie returning from Vietnam, walking down the street, in complete shock from the war and in disbelief from the cultural changes...

Great script and great acting. The dialogue between Rose and Eddie is flawless.

That was definitely my favourite bit in the entire movie, it was just so passionate and clumsy but so real!

"Screws fall out all the time, the world is an imperfect place."

i agree...that was great. I also liked when they argued a little over singers, and that song We Shall Overcome.

"I'm not from these parts. From a little place called England-we used to run the world before you."

their first encounter at the cafe. when river was trying to impress lili taylor. that bit was funny. the dialogue and the whole situation.

I concur! I loved all of those scenes as well. I think my favorite was either the end when they hug or when they share their first kiss. I love that music room! the song she sang and the realization on his face about the song and how he feel for her even more was also one of my favorites.

Pretty much my favourite scenes too, especially the first kiss scene. It was beautiful because it was so REAL. You described it perfectly. The scene in the bedroom was real to me too. I remember feeling that way. Nervous, shy, awkward, excited. Lili was amazingly good in those scenes. :)

My favorite part was when "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" starts playing. I love that song and that entire scene.

The entire picture!!

But I have a few very small poignant moments not scenes at all

In the cafe during the small talk before Eddie asks Rose to go out with him. Where he hands her his Marine ID and she says "you look so angry" and he says "no I'm just ready". It just shows what little self awareness Eddie has and on the other hand Rose's innate sensitivity

In the restaurant Eddies reaction to Rose sharing her meal out for him, the of River Phoenix's skill in conveying subtleties to the character of Eddie really shows here.

After Eddie and Rose say goodbye the morning after he walks away and then turns back to look at her and smiles

I love love love the whole film.

My favourite part on the film is when it shows Eddie being affected by Rose's singing 'What have they done to the rain', when the camera comes in closer to his face and you can see she has got straight to his heart.
And the time at the end when he looks at her saying goodbye, he stares right at her for a brief second (they captured that look on the front cover), and he stares so strongly that you believe he loves her. Gives me shivers down my spine!
I adore this film

I love all those scenes!

One part that i think is hilarious is the beginning when the boys are all trying to find dates. their pick-up lines are priceless! "you a lesbian?"

i laugh everytime i hear that

omg omg omg!
I LOOOOOVE the scene where River is running down the empty street after he leaves Rose. that song is PERFECT for that scene. it's kind of depressing in a way. it always hurts to see someone you love as they leave...

The entire restaurant sequence.

Runnin just as fast as they can, every girl's crazy bout a sharp-dressed man.

reply

"Is this like regular bingo?"
"well, yes except its musical"
"Oh, I can't play bingo"

reply

Just before Eddie leaves after their night together, "take care of yourself", I love how he says that.

I love the part in the restaurant aswell! I laughed for ages especially at the bit where he says "I'll just take a f u c k i n g beer"! I also love the little grin that River does when he's showing his jacket to the waiter.

reply

My favorite part is when he realized that he couldn't bring Rose into that club, into that contest, he was having second thoughts.

"I promise you, before I die I'll surely come to your doorstep"
