DVD Realease

When will this terrifc movie be on DVD?

reply

I have a feeling that the movie may never make it to DVD, or we may have to wait a *very* long time for it to appear on DVD.

I first saw the movie via a screening on UK television in the mid 1990s; I recorded the film, but the tape has long since disappeared. Recently, I've had an urge to revisit the movie, but as far as I can tell the only home video release the movie has ever had is via the long out-of-print US rental(?) VHS. I ordered a used copy of the tape from Amazon Marketplace, but I'd love to see the movie appear on some company's schedule of DVD releases.

Me too. From time to time I look it up, but sadly there don't appear to be any plans.

There's a nice letterboxed version of the movie 'doing the rounds' in the Interwebs, from a television broadcast of the film. I'd never seen the film letterboxed before, and it added to my enjoyment of the picture.

Here's hoping the movie gets a DVD release in the future. It had a decent LaserDisc release in the 1990s, so I don't see why not.

I don't think the movie was shot in widescreen format. However it would be interesting to see it's transition. Please can you explain what the interweb is.

"I don't think the movie was shot in widescreen format".

DELUSION was shot in Super 35, a 'flat' (rather than anamorphic) widescreen format, like a few other films of the period such as RESERVOIR DOGS, FALLING DOWN, TERMINATOR 2 and BLACK RAIN. Essentially, the prints sent out to theatres are masked to 2.35:1 or thereabouts (a ratio similar to traditional anamorphic widescreen formates such as Panavision and CinemaScope) but the image can be shown unmatted on a standard (4:3) television set. The TV broadcasts of DELUSION that I've seen seem to be of the unmatted variant, and the film's aesthetic in these TV prints has always struck me as quite flat and uninspired; but the widescreen framing in the letterboxed versions of the film are much more inspiring (and as per how the film was meant to be seen in cinemas), with the compositions being far more balanced and with much less 'dead space' at the tops and bottoms of the frame.

Some images from the widescreen version can be seen at the following links:

It's nothing special; just a sarky name for the Internet, a hybridisation of Internet and the World Wide Web.

I'm sure the letterbox version would give a more pleasurable viewing experiance. There must be a few prints left of this. The cut off of the picture form both sides would not give recognition to the movie that it deserves.

Falling Down was shot in real anamorphic.

reply

Yep, you're right. It was shot in Panavision. (For the curious, it's listed here: http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/widescreen/widescreen%20%28f%29.htm .) I could have sworn it was one of that wave of early 1990s films shot in Super 35, but then again it's not a film that I've really thought about since its cinema release: I've only seen it once or twice since then.

These days movies are not sot in 35mm. The latest HD craze has taken over. It doesn't look so good and natural.

reply

Agreed. With a few exceptions, I'm not a big fan of HD video-shot films either, even when they've been processed to look like 'proper' film.

Sony has been releasing manufactured-on-demand DVD-Rs of some of their lesser-known titles, so I imagine they'll release a DVD-R of this one sooner or later. I'd like to see this film.

reply

Please inform me when you know of it's release. I'm eager to see it.

reply

As soon as I find out about it, I will.

Thanks.

Delusion has been out there in widescreen (letterbox) for a long time on laserdisc. This web site used to be dedicated to laserdisc but many have forgotten that or never knew it. I picked it up for ten bucks (although it is usually more)on ebay. I guess a lot of people have been watching the crappy VHS tape that ruins films because of pan and scan. The film should be seen in wldescreen for a proper critique.

IT was on a letterboxes Laserdisc in 1992
