One thing answers to FAQ don't address

We've been complaining that there's not a region 1 version of the DVD out for ages, and I still haven't heard word that there ever will be. What bugs me the most is that there seems to be no reason for this, considering that it is available in at least 2 other regions.

So does anyone know WHY? they aren't putting forth the effort?!

Just get a multi-region dvd player or a video tape!

region free player: I've considered that, but as of now, there are not a lot of non-R1 films that I desperately want. So the cost of this film (DVD+player) is just a bit prohibitive. I mean, if someone told me "IT WILL NEVER BE RELEASED IN R1", then that could be enough for me to get a region free player, but I'm holding out for now.

I saw Jeunet speak recently at a screening of this and he seemed to be as puzzled as you are about the film not being on DVD. He even told the audience that he personally turned over a print of the picture to Miramax specifically for a DVD conversion, yet it has never happened...

Region-free players really are a godsend in cases like this.

HOWEVER the simple fact there is no region 1 DVD of this wonderfull movie is puzzling. Maybe, like El Topo, it is court-up in some kind legal snafu preventing it's re-release. Or, more likely, the rights for the film are in the hands of some big stupid company who don't even realize what it is and wouldn't care anyway.

However one way around regional coding is if you have a PC (or I dare say a Mac) you can buy a DVD-rom drive which, coupled with Windows, should play any region or format disk no problems. If you've got a decent monitor the picture quality will be very good as modern computer monitors are by necessity much higher res than a TV.

On the other hand, if like me, you're a Linux user the relevant software to play DVDs can be found for free download pretty quickly.

The Mac sucks for different regions. It only allows you to switch regions like 6 times. Then you're stuck on that region. I found Linux to be a real pain to set up for DVD as well. I'm sure there's a configuration out there somewhere that's good though.

PCs have the same problem, which is why I use VLC Media Player. Works on Windows, Mac, Linux and other OSes and allows you to watch DVDs from any region on your computer with no problems.

Welcome to reality. It's usually the other way around. Region-encoding in itself is a really stupid invention.

If it's true that it was intended for Miramax to release the movie on DVD, then their current situation with the Weinsteins walking out could have a lot to do with various projects being either shelved or postponed.

They could be fascist anarchists, still doesn't change the fact that I don't have a car...

The odd thing is, in Australia almost all DVD players are region-free. I got mine new for $75 (about $55 US or 30 Pounds in UK currency) when I realised my ps2 wasn't going to play my region 1 and 2 imports.

So, are region-free DVD players an expensive commodity in America? Maybe you should get one from overseas, lol.

I know the original post was from 2004... but there is now a Region 1 copy of Delicatessen available. It was released this summer.
