Impressive in every way

'Delicatessen' is without a doubt the best film from Caro and Jeunet's collaborative AND individual filmographies, i am very surprised that many people prefer 'Amelie', which i like too, but 'Delicatessen' has to be one of the greatest achievements in modern world cinema.

Does anyone else agree?

i dont think i could choose one above another. Amelie is certainly visually 'cleaner' but that's just budget and advancement in technology i suppose. Delicatessen is a lot darker with a definate arthouse feel , whereas many more people can access Amelie.

I've loved Delicatessen every time I've seen it.

Didn't think much of amelie.

I think perhaps I somehow saw it as a youg child,; I used to have a recurring dream about being with my girlfriend in one room of a cool old building which was filling with water. Then the door would open, and the water smite my enemies.
Love those colours.

I think Delicatessen is a visually remarkable film (but I think City of Lost Children is even more stunning).

However, I prefer Amelie (if ony by a tiny degree). Amelie is one of those films that profoundly affects you when you watch it. It's one of my all time favourites - and that's a pretty competitive list I can tell you. It managed to cut through my cast-iron cynicism in a way no other film has done.

I prefer "The City of Lost Children" (it's on my top 10 list), followed by Delicatessen, followed by Amelie.

I didn't really like Amelie nearly as much as the other two - it was a bit too shallow for my taste. The first two movies, however, had some incredibly poignant moments - sometimes I think that the directors didn't even realize that they had created one, because Amelie seems to be rather less intelligent than "City of Lost Children" (IMO). Much can be attributed to the actors, as well, and perhaps to the darker storyline.

Honestly, I do not see how City of Lost Children wasn't more popular...

City of Lost Children wasn't more popular because it's a bit way out, a bit too strange. And I'm glad it's not popular - it's a little undiscovered masterpiece that is only found by really looking, and only enjoyed by a select few who can appreciate real artism in cinema.

We have this and the rest of the world can have Scary Movie 4. And they're welcome to it.

I really liked Delicatessen but thought that City of Lost Children was a little scattered. Amelie and A Very Long Engagement are some of my favorite movies, too. Jeunet is awesome.

I'd like to see Caro direct one himself. But, in the meantime we can all wait for Jeunet's next one.

When I watched City of Lost Children I thought it was wonderful to watch because of the visuals but I didn't fully understand parts of the plot. Im sure if I watched it again I would get it but I was wondering how Delicatessen was? Whenever people talk about it seems like they mainly talk only about how visually stunning it is.

It has a good plot too. Very weird but imaginative and it works.

I agree, DavidJT. Amelie is easy to love, but not the masterpiece that Delicatessen is.

This thread is almost 4 years old, but yeah, I agree. I just saw it for the first time and it's definitely in my top 20. I can't wait to watch it again.
