Most under-rated film ever, and one of the best black comedies

Next to Heathers, this in my opinion if one of the greatest dark-comedies that I've seen. This is also the most under-rated films, because no one really knows about it, and if more people saw it, I think it would become more popular and maybe more films like it would come out.

i've been trying to find a way to see this for months and months (i live in the u.s. and there isn't a region 1 release), and happened to catch the whole thing on IFC the other day. I must agree that this is one of the coolest black comedies that i have ever seen, and to be honest i think that i like it even better than Amelie, a very long engagement and the City of Lost Children. If only it could get a proper American release so many people could appreciate this.

I am hopeful that by now, seven years later, you have figured out how to watch DVDs from all regions, without restriction. I hate to see people waiting around needlessly for releases in specific regions. There's simply no reason for it.

The ironic thing is that coconuts are, in fact, migratory.

yeah pretty underated but arent all the best films

Heathers is such a great film hardly anyone i know has seen it let alone delicatessen

is it like dead alive in terms of comedy or at all?

reply

It might be pointless to reply to your question 6 years later but no, Delicatessen doesn't share many similarities with Dead Alive (aka: Braindead). Both are very funny, but the dark humor is more present in Delicatessen, as well as traditional French visual gags. Dead Alive is outright, in your face funny due to the insane circumstances our protagonist has created.
(No, he didn't create the rat-monkey, but being a huge momma's boy didn't help his cause)

Although I adore both, I have to say Delicatessen is very artistic in its cinematography, where Dead Alive's art is in the gore.

We've met before, haven't we?

I saw it for the first time yesterday.Brilliant in so many ways.I absolutely loved it.

The greatest black comedy ever made is and will always be Terry Gilliam's Brazil, however . . . I saw Delicatessen for the first time last night and was greatly impressed. I had seen Amelie a few months ago, and to be honest Delicatessen was a little darker than I was expecting. It was still highly enjoyable and very delicious to watch.

Absolutely one of the most underrated ever and one of the more darker comedies out there.

The bathroom scene was the best one in it as well. Where the three people are waiting for Louison to fall from the toilet. Hilarious and scary at the same time, almost wet my pants.

I really hope it doesn't become very popular, because it might ruin it. Like with Nightmare Before Christmas, its still good, but it became too popular for its own good.

And if this movie does become popular and they do make more movies like it, they will probably all be a disgrace to the genre.

Heathers and Delicatessen are, indeed, the greatest dark comedies of all time. I don't think there will be one any greater for a very very very long time.

I do agree with how underrated this film is. But, Hey! that's one of the MANY reasons why I love it, because it's kind of personal, not many people have seen it. I like that.

I cannot say if it is the most underrated but it is for sure underrated
I just saw the film and really liked it.
It was like watching theatre!!

reply

I think it is a pretty good film, but I know it's not the type of film just any person would like (usually a person who is not strong with intuition).

reply

The films mentioned in this thread are all great. Heathers, Brazil, Delicatessan...

But I submit that the best black comedy is Withnail & I. Love that film.

reply

One of the best black comedies? This IS the best black comedy ever!
