Was there anybody besides french people who thought it was funny?

Not hating on Delicatessen, it was a really fascinating movie. But I think I managed to giggle once throughout the entire movie. The movie is labelled "dark comedy" and I totally dig black comedy, rarely seen a black comedy that wasn't funny. But Delicatessen wasn't really funny to me at all. Everytime I saw something weird and ridiculous, I imagined a french family sitting in a theater laughing their asses off, while everyone else in the theater had stonefaces. I love weird and wacky humor, but I even thought the american version of "Les visiteurs" was way funnier than the french. There have been the occassional hilarious french film, but overall I find french people to have a poor sense of humor. I'm just curious, did anyone actually find Delicatessen funny? If so, can you explain some of the funny scenes to me?

I'm Indonesian and I never laughed so much at a black comedy until I saw Delicatessen.

I'm American and I found it to be funny. It's not that the french have a poor sense of humor... just a different kind of humor. To me American humor is less intellectual than european humor (not to say that the europeans don't have their share of dirty humor) but Americans tend to like the 'America's Funniest Videos' kind of stuff where European is very different. It's not as in your face... like the woman who kept trying to commit suicide and failed every time... and each time it got more and more ridiculous. I thought that was pretty funny. Or even just when Louison arrived and the butcher is saying that he wasn't big enough for the job... it's funny because Louison thinks he means he's not built/strong enough but really he's saying he's not fat enough to eat yet. I prefer that kind of humor... the kind where you have to be paying attention the whole time to get the jokes.

It's not a "funny comedy", i.e. the film has an overall comedic tone but you are not really expected to laugh at it.

Either you get it, or you don't. There's nothing to explain. Either you find it funny, or you don't. And if you don't there's nothing nobody can do to explain it for you. You just have to accept that this film simply isn't for you...

The first time I saw it, I thought it was the funniest film I had ever seen. There was a local cable channel where I lived in the mid-90's, that showed the same programs every day of the week, they only changed the tableaux weekly. So, for seven days, it was the exact same set-up of programs during the day. And one time they showed Delicatessen at nine o'clock in the evening every day of the week. And I happened to catch it early that week, so I actually saw the film five times in a row during that week. I had to see it over and over, so funny it was.

I found it funny from the get go, as well as other things (cinema-photography, acting, editing, directing, etc. all well done) . I waited for it to come out on DVD in the US for years, and almost bought a region-free player just for this one film. Now I see that it's on Bluray too, so I'm going to get it again.

That rythmic sex scene successfully proves to be both cool and hilarious. What I like about the humor in this movie is the fact that it IS very french and I love it. It's not really the funniest movie I've seen, but at places it's really damn funny and proves to be a worthy classic. City Of The Lost Children will be the next Jeunet-movie for me!

I agree with you. I don't even get how this is called a black comedy, because most of the humor in it is just child-like imo.

I'm American. I saw it for the first time on tv in my late teens, my sister and loved it. Just watched it again and still find I like it's quirky humor.
