Why did Jack fake his death?

Why did Jack fake his death?

The explanation he gives Adrianne is ridiculous and belied by his subsequent actions (kidnapping of her daughter). And other explanations just don't add up given the prior facts.

If you think you have a valid and logic explanation, please post it.

Well what I gathered was that he was a CON man, thief and murderer. He stole another man's identity and lived like him for at least 6 years. He killed Thomas and stole the Egyptian necklace because he wanted the money. He then put a fake in it's place. After the fake was discovered and Adrian was onto him he staged his own death. Adrian, after doing some defective work found out that he was really Frank Sullivan and she also found out who Jack Saunders really was. Because of this and because he was unable to get the necklace back on his own he contacted Adrian. He told her that story in order for her to help him get it back. It was a fake story. He was living another life as Daniel Sherman, had a new house and a pregnant wife. He got exactly what he deserved at the end of the movie!

Actually, I think he purposely clued Adrianne in on reasons to be suspicious of him.

He made so many mistakes.

1. He was in the Chesterfield Hotel when she was scheduled to be there so that her partner saw him.
2. He had a Chesterfield mint in his suit pocket (knowing that she would empty his pockets when having it cleaned).
3. He had a card from "Daniel Sherman" in his suit pocket.
4. He left his credit card at the lingerie store in Manhattan while he was supposedly going to Boston.
5. He was on a rather suspicious phone call in the middle of the night that woke her up.

He gave her so many reasons to be suspicious of him that he might as well have rented a billboard to say it.

I think he was also Adam Lucas who arranged a blind date with her so that he could be seen by her (exchanging smiles) and then show up at her work place as if it was a big coincidence since he'd been there a year earlier. I think he was casing her during that time.

I don't think he intended for her to show up at his mother's place. He was following her and their daughter (plus he was sneaking into the loft apartment at night in both of their rooms).

I think he intended to confront her there at some point after he'd realized that the necklace was missing but she had tracked him down to his mother's place.

WHY would he set things up to make her suspicious? I think he was ready to leave with the necklace for a new life with his new wife and baby elsewhere. The wife was packing when Adrianne went to their house.

He was ready to move on so he was dumping Adrianne but he had to go back for the necklace once he realized that he didn't have it anymore. It's likely that the whole reason to be with Adrianne was to steal something from the museum. Once he had it, he was done there.
