Significance of the quote 'I'm not Roman!'

We watched this movie in my english class and we were asked to write an essay on the significance of this quote but outside of the obvious fact that Mike is Saying he is not Roman and in the end he turns out not to be I really don't see the significance of it. Can some one help me please?

Spoiler

Mike is not Romain, he is Grace/Margaret. They switched genders when they were reincarnated.

I think he is saying that the past is past; what happened then doesn't have to happen again. They are different people in the present and have the power to change things for the future -- which they do.

I know youre essay was handed in ages ago, but...

(And first, LOL at previous post!)
It display's Mike's disbelief (at the time) of the whole business of reincarnation. This is consistent with his sceptical personality and Roman/Amanda's stronger and more spiritual and intuitive personality (He knew that this was all "far from over"). It also ironically turns out to be true, as he was never Roman, he was Margaret!

I wish we were studying this as opposed to Bladerunner...

You have misheard the quote. He doesn't say "I'm not Roman." He is saying "I'm not ROAMIN'", ie. he isn't moving around, he is staying where he is.
