Scariest line of dialog ever

So, to those who saw this in the theater in 1991... did you gasp/scream when Mike said...

"I would never hurt you, Margaret" ????

In all my years of moviegoing I never before heard an audience react so strongly to a simple line of dialogue! What fun this movie was.

it is freaky.

i think i'm gonna dance now

I saw this film in the cinema with a friend and at the point where he says "I would never hurt you Margaraet" we both gasped and clutched each other arm! I also remember the two ladies sat the other side of us were doing the same!!

Blimey, that shows what an impact that one line made on me that I remember it so clearly after all this time :-) A damn good film no mater how many times I've watched it!

reply

What's sad is that most people I show this movie to don't "get" that line until I have to explain it to them. Oh well.

reply

The only thing is why would he say that since it clearly states that HE IS MARGRET later on.

reply

It's because he doesn't say it from memory. It's kind of a Freudian slip. Even he is starting to think she might be margaret and that he might be roman.

I agree. It's a Freudian slip, nothing more. But a very unfortunate one in terms of timing.

Yes, it scared me too. Can't remember whether I physically gasped but I do remember jumping slightly.

"He murders his wife every night. Other than that, I think he's pretty harmless."

reply

hah, i was watching with my dad, and that line shook us up, though i started laughing when watching him duck away as she grabbed the gun.

Grace's horrified and sudden reaction to being called that name along with the sting of Patrick Doyle's brilliant music makes that seen a winner.

If you expect the unexpected doesn't the unexpected then become the expected?

reply

Yes...she jumped about 10 feet in two seconds. Her leap scared me as much as what he said. One second she's in bed, the very next one, she's in the corner of the room holding the gun. I freaked a bit as well, when I first saw the film (actually only last year, on DVD!). I would have loved to have seen it in the theatre, because I love scary films, and mass fright among an audience! :)

reply

Sorry to disagree. To me,the scariest line in the movie is Garcia's soto voce throw away line near the end: 'They opened an antiques store somewhere.' I lost my breath!.

reply

I've never seen it at the movies; I rented it when I was in college, and I'm watching it right now. And I must admit, even though I just read this thread, I still flinched!

You are only coming through in waves...your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying...

reply

This is definitely an awesome movie moment! Great scene!

reply

Yes. I got chills. I saw this in theatres and noticed other viewers reactions, too. Love this movie...saw it in theatres and have loved it ever since (especially since some of the film is shot in B&W).

Those really ARE blueberries, ma'am

reply

Hahaha, that line really is amazing!

I saw it in the theatre in 1991. I never saw an audience react that strongly to one line until 1998. On opening night of the X-Files film the entire audience howled over "Mulder. It's me."
