Possibly Worst American Accents Ever.....

I actually like this film. Very enjoyable......

Except for Thompson and Branagh's horrible mutilation of the American accent. Just horrible.

reply

I didn't think they were that bad. I found the delivery Branagh gave funnier than the accent itself. He exaggerated Mike's "American" style in the way he'd talk and in his expressions. There was this one scene where Mike learns something surprising and he stands there with his eyes popping and his jaw dropped for several moments. They cut away from him, then cut back and he was still standing there with the same goofily shocked facial expression. Heheh. Is that how Branagh sees Americans?

Gosh, I thought the accents were horrible, especially his.

Yeah, I remember the scene you're talking about. Funny.

Are you American? I'm American, but I lived in London for a few years and my husband is British, so I guess maybe I hear both accents come through better than most people, or something? Its a pet peeve.

I noticed Emma's natural accent kept slipping through, and Kenneth tried, but it was just ... bad. Terrific movie, though, accents notwithstanding.

reply

oh, god, i'm so glad someone else sees that. i liked the movie too. just thought the accents were distracting.

I am American and speak three foreign languages fluently (French, Greek, Italian), and their accents were FINE....absolutely fine. If you didn't know they were British, you'd definitely think they were American. They certainly speak better American English than does almost the entire Hispanic population in this country, along with many of those born here. Come on...you guys who are faulting their American accents are looking to pick a fight. You're absolutely making complete fools of yourselves.

And furthermore, there are too many natural dialects in this country to even ascertain "the proper way to speak American English". New Jersey, Minnesota, Chicago proper, the entire sunbelt (and all of its verious modes of a Southern accent)....there are too numerous dialects to even consider that Branagh's and Thompson's were "bad". They both sounded very naturally midwestern.

After Kevin Kostner in Robin Hood, I can let this slide.

reply

Hmmm....
when I first watched this movie back in 1991, I did not
know who Thompson and Branagh were,I thought they WERE
American ! LOL

Not long after I did find out they were British and
they quickly went on my list of fav actor/actress.

So, no, I never noticed the accents were bad,
they sounded like people I knew !

What part of US are you from ??
Maybe thats it?

Or maybe since you lived in England that is it...
did you know they were British when you first watched
the film...that could have something to do with it too.

Thank you. And to all of you who still they had "awful American accents"...my God...I'll say the same then for Minnesotans, as well as the entire sunbelt....if Texans (where I lived for three years) and Alabamans don't completely bastardize the English language, then no one does.

reply

Their accents were not bad at all. Although they sometimes slid around through various American accents (Branagh had the California thing down good but sometimes he slipped into a Brooklyn one!)

reply

I saw the movie years ago, when it first came out, and have seen it several times since. I knew who Branagh and Thompson were, and was thoroughly looking forward to this movie's release. I was not disappointed.

My 19-yr old daughter was recently raving about this wonderful thriller she'd seen on cable, and it turns out she was "introducing" me to DEAD AGAIN. What an insiteful child!

Regarding the accents:

I was a telemarketer for a national company, and would talk to people who lived, and had accents from, all over the U.S.

I've gotta tell ya, folks, there is NO definitive American accent. American English is a very dialectical(?) language, which accents can be compared with British English, Scots English, Cockney, etc.

It's not really fair to say their American accents were bad, simply different...

Now, if you wanna talk bad accents, there's any Keanu Reeves film in which he had to sound like someone other than himself. Would you really put Emma Thompson & Kenneth Branagh in the same league?

I thought not.

reply

Funny you mention Keanu Reeves, since he was in Much Ado with Ken and Emma. He walked around like a wooden cut out and almost single-handedly ruined a great movie.

reply

I think he walks around like a wooden cut-out in every movie he's in. He registered a bit of a pulse in "Something's Gotta Give"...but not much. He just can't emote.

reply

Wow. I thought Kenneth's American accent was perfect. Seemed really natural and unaffected to me as opposed to Brits who speak very slow, inuncating each word to fake American. His German accent was the one that bothered me.

reply

I thought their accents were just fine. I saw this movie in 1991 in the theaters when it was released (I now own the DVD) and though on occasion I detected tiny bits of "slippage" here and there (only because I already knew they were both British)I thought they were outstanding. They nailed it. I mean, we're talking first-rate A-listers here (Thompson and Branagh). They did a tremendous job with the accents, IMO. I also agree there's no one definitive American accent. Americans around the country have different regional accents and I thought they did great with the "generic" American accent.

reply

I'm from the UK so can't speak with much authority on this but I didn't think their accents were bad. Branagh's was better than Thompson's I thought but I felt that Branagh was trying a bit too hard - but then he does tend to overact anyway!

Why did they need to be American though? They let Derek Jacobi be English.

"He murders his wife every night. Other than that, I think he's pretty harmless."

reply

I noticed the accents slipping a bit, but that's not really uncommon in America. We have people from all over the world here and even those born here may have been raised by immigrants. I have been asked many times if I am an immigrant and I was born and raised in the south. I guess my European parentage has affected my speech.

As far as Derek Jacobi's character goes, don't forget his accent was explained by his mother. They went to England where a hypnotist cured him of his stutter. It only makes sense that he picked up a British accent.

What are you talking about? When the movie came out, I had a hard time convincing my friends here in LA that they were both Brits!

I actually think both Ken & Em have *done* lousy Amer accents since Dead Again, but they were pretty good in this movie!

reply

I don't know which American accent of Emma's you found bad. However, did you happen to see her on Ellen (Degeneres' sitcom in the 90's). She pretends she's actually an American, from Dayton, OH, but has duped the entire world into thinking she's British. Her Dayton/flat/midwestern accent is perfect.

I never really understood this complaint about accents. There are over sixty languages spoken in the U.S. and hundreds of accents. A lot depends on who you talk to.
