a well directed soap opera

after all the praise and a personal recommendation from a friend i expected much more epic drama than soap opera. now, the soap opera was brilliantly shot. i loved how the master relatively remained faceless. i loved the theme of the lanterns. i thought the actresses were each great. still the story is heavy with the cattiness i would expect to see on an episode ofdynasty. even with all the good elements in the end i felt like i just finished watching a soap opera from ancient china.

i can't decide if it was that the characters were too thinly drawn or that the story itself is just classic daytime drama style (or primetime if this was the 80's). i didn't dislike it, but it did not live up to my expectations after all the praise.

"WHO'S ON TOP & WHO'S ON BOTTOM NOW, huh?! WHO'S ON TOP & WHO'S ON BOTTOM NOW!"

I just watched it and had the exact thoughts - too much drama at every turn. Basically, everything was good except for the story.

You're right, it's technically a soap opera portrayed in an artistic way. In a nice artistic way.

I would have thought a lot of dramas are just soap operas.

It's that man again!!
