Practically a remake

This movie is practically a remake of the Dino de Laurentiis produced 1960 movie "Crimen". It was also known as "And Suddenly It's Murder" and "Killing in Monte Carlo". The characters have different names but the plot is the same. "Crimen" starred Dino's wife, Silvana Mangano (playing Cybil Sheppard's role) and Vittorio Gassman (playing the James Belushi role). Alberto Sordi ably played the John Candy role.

Well, since the screenplays for both movies were written by Rodolfo Sonego, I think it's not so much "practically a remake" as it is actually a remake. It's a good idea to check for things like "(earlier screenplay)" in the writing credits before you say something so obvious.

I didn't think this could be called 'an out and out remake' since all the charaters had name changes. I'll bet you haven't seen both movies.

If you watch the old The Parent Trap with Haley Mills and the new The Parent Trap with Lindsay Lohan, you will notice that none of the characters have the same names, but I don't know anybody that wouldn't call the 1998 one a remake of the 1961 one. Just because the characters have different names doesn't mean it is no longer a remake, if it has the same basic plot with the same basic characters (just with different names).

I stand corrected.

Consider as well for a moment, that the character names in the original were all of Italian origin; this film was repackaged for the Anglo audience...

And I for one consider this a perfect movie for a winter's afternoon.

It was an English language remake although probably not as good as the original film.
