Favorite Quote from Teh Commitments

My favorite quote from the movie would have to be the line that Jimmy says while he's interveiwing himself. I don't know it exactly but he says something like "Jimmy, did you ever think that you'd be as big as the Rolling Stones? Who the f*ck are they, Terry?" and the last line when he says the song lyrics and then he goes "What does that mean, Jimmy? F*ck if I know, Terry!"

What quotes do you guys like from the movie? And feel free to correct my quotes. I know they're far from perfect because I saw the movie like 2 weeks ago.

If you want to destroy my sweater, fork over $25 so I can get it replaced!

I haven't just seen it myself, but Jimmy with "it's not ROYD, it's ROIIYDDE" when they're first trying to sing Mustang Sally.

what was the quote saying about "if the irish want feeling...you gotta have soul." it's what the oldest musician was preaching to the band in the basement before they started any real rehearsals (i think).

Im doing a short paper on this movie, and I need to base it around a quote. can anyone help me out?! THANKS

Do you mean,

Joey - And remember, Rome wasn't built in a day.
Bernie - *beep* Dublin was!

reply

The Irish brothers wouldn't be shootin' the arses off of each other if they had soul.

I think that's the quote, obviously meaning music like what they played would have kept all of Ireland united.

"I got a rock."---Charlie Brown, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

the best line is "*beep* off" at the beginning when the old man is sleeping at the wedding and wakes up.

reply

Wow, there are so many...how do you choose one.

How about:

"He said 'God sent him'"...
"On a f*&kin' Suzuki?"

Or:

"Is this the band? I'll bet U2 are sh#ttin' themselves..."

one more:

"And you, George Michael...you call me an ejit again and you're going to get a drumstick shoved up your hole. The one you don't sing out of..."

reply

"...and you George Michael, you ever call me a fvckin' eejit again, you'll be goin home with a drumstick shoved up your hole, the one you don't sing out of."

"That'll be the day."

"Yeah?! Well it's comin' soon, so keep your vaseline handy."

------

When Jimmy is at Ballymun goin' to see Bernie.

"You're not takin' that into the lift?!"

"I have to, the stairs'll kill 'im."

------

At the hospital.

"Doctor told me it was a mild shock, didn't feel like a mild shock to me.
Made me hair stand on end.

"Your hair always stands on end."

"Not fvckin' all of it!"

------

"Yeah Tommy, before ZEE Germans get there."

"I never pictured God with a fat gut and a corset signing 'My Way' at Caesar's Palace."

Lol, I agree

...actually that quote is exactly where the "black" part of my ID came from. I'm not Irish, I'm from the Balkans, but that's pretty much the other black district of Europe. And I'm from the East of the Balkans. And from a rather small city in the East of Balkans. The label is really more than adequate.

Words, Mr. Sullivan, are precious things. And they are not to be tempered with!

My fave as well

U2 must be *beep* themselves

my favorite quote is "god said the irish brothers wouldn't be shootin' the butts off each other if they had soul" Joey the lips fagan.

or " Yeah.. and my name is Jimmy the bollocks rabitte" Jimmy Rabitte

I will never forget the first time I saw the movie. My father and I were watching it together on VHS, and hadn't heard anything about it so we didn't know what to expect. A few minutes into the movie, a sweet litle girl accidentally jostles a sweet looking old man at a wedding reception. He wakes up and watches her run off, and then yells out after her *beep* off." It startled us both, and my dad and I started laughing and couldn't stop. We knew this Irish movie was going to take us a long way from "Danny Boy" . . . . !

reply

I liked the last lines:
Jimmy: "Well, Terry...'We skipped the light fandango/Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor...'."
Jimmy as Terry: "What does that mean, Jimmy?"
Jimmy: "I'm f***ed if I know!"

There were so many good quotes, though. It's really hard to pick.

"Everyone loves an Italian girl."

My two favorite lines are:

"The Irish are the blacks of Europe and Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland and the northside Dubliners are the blacks of Dublin. So say it once and say it proud: I'm black and I'm proud."

and

"You want to stand out from the rest of the tossers. You want to get up and shout, 'I'm Outspan f*ckin' Foster, and I'm Derek f*ckin' Scully. And I'm not a tosser.'"

reply

"the lord doesn't like it when we whisper"

My favourite line has to be at the first gig, and some random woman heckles and Mickah tears through the crowd...
