My how things have progressed in 19 years. I did not see one cell phone in the movie and even Maggie was using a phone booth in the courthouse when her mother collapsed. Today it's like most people have them grafted to their ears.
I no longer care to characterize the over-abundance of cell phones in society as "progress". As the OP said, they seem grafted to people's hands. It's as if the phone forms an impenetrable screen around the user, making them oblivious to all that goes on around them, whether they are walking down the street or, most disturbing and irritating, driving a car!
Life was much simpler when we just spoke to each other face-to-face, paid attention to the road, and were not able to get a hold of each other so easily.
I agree. Sadly now there's an expectation that we carry a cell phone with us 24/7, and always be on-call meaning we never get a moment of solitude without the fear of that infernal machine buzzing/ringing. I was looking forward to being able to fly abroad one day just for the satisfaction of being in an environment where cell phones were banned but I see that even that rule has now changed.

I agree with every single word. The proliferation of Smart Phones / Social Media is not "progress", they are the new opium of the people, used primarily as time wasting distractions and ego boosters for the masses. They are both also used with the same obsessive zeal that was previously reserved for religion.
