Who would be in this if they made it today?

So who do you think they'd cast if they made this today?

I don't ask because I particularly love this movie. I liked it as much as the next guy when it came out, but I think it really doesn't hold up so well today. But, anyway, it's fun to look back on a movie like this, that is really of its era, and think about how they'd tackle it now.

I feel like it would go something like this:

MITCH: Ben Stiller or, failing that, Owen Wilson

ED: Vince Vaughn

PHIL: MAYBE Ed Helms. But someone like a Charlie Day would probably be more likely.

CURLY: You have to figure they'd go for Clint Eastwood. That would be a stretch, but stranger things have happened. If not him, they'd go for Robert Duvall or Tommy Lee Jones (also reaches), and if not them, it'd probably fall to somebody like good old Walker Texas Ranger (Chuck Norris).

I agree with you about Ben Stiller for 'Mitch', or alternatively, Steve Carroll. Owen Wilson would be better suited to 'Ed' than 'Mitch', because Wilson's persona is more the outgoing, adventurous type than the neurotic worrier, but I like your suggestion of Vince Vaughn.

Ed Helms could definitely play 'Phil' but how about Will Ferrell? Stick some glasses on him and he could play the bumbling, well-meaning loser type. Although Rick Moranis was originally meant to play 'Phil' before his wife was sadly contracted with cancer and he had to leave the production (and I am in no doubt he would have been brilliant in the part), I rather liked the dynamic of two short guys and one very tall one (i.e. Daniel Stern), especially since the tall one is the most man-child like and the biggest screw-up of the three.

Clint Eastwood would be perfect for 'Curly' but Tommy Lee Jones would be more likely as Eastwood rarely chooses to appear in films he doesn't direct.
